About
Lemmings on PlayStation 2 is a 2006 version of the classic puzzle game, adapted from Team17’s PlayStation Portable remake. It keeps the series’ central challenge: guide a stream of absent-minded lemmings from their entrance hatches to the exit while preventing them from walking into traps, water, sheer drops and other hazards.
Each stage supplies a limited set of jobs, so success depends on planning a safe route before the crowd reaches danger. Individual lemmings can become Climbers, Floaters, Bombers, Blockers, Builders, Bashers, Miners or Diggers. These roles let players scale walls, survive falls, redirect the group, construct stairways and carve passages through destructible terrain.
The main game uses a controller-driven cursor to choose a skill and assign it to a lemming in real time. Timing matters as much as route design: a Builder can bridge a gap for the group, a Blocker can turn them away from an unfinished path, and a Bomber can remove an obstruction at the cost of one lemming. Players must also meet each level’s rescue requirement before its time limit expires.
Its familiar side-on puzzle action is presented on richly colored, pre-rendered 3D landscapes. The camera may show modeled scenery and depth around the route, but the lemmings still travel across a two-dimensional playfield. This preserves the readable, task-focused gameplay of the original while giving its environments a more elaborate visual treatment.
The PlayStation 2 release shares the remake’s 156 standard levels, drawn from the original game and new material, and it supports creating and exchanging custom levels with the PSP edition. That makes it distinct from the PSP game without turning it into a wholly separate sequel, while the PS2 port itself was handled by Rusty Nutz.
Its defining extra is EyeToy Lemmings, a camera-based mode with stages designed around the EyeToy accessory. After separating the player’s image from the background, the game can treat arms, hands and body outlines as part of the play space. Players can make temporary bridges or barriers, nudge lemmings past obstacles and use gestures such as waving to influence the route.
The EyeToy mode is an optional complement to the standard controller puzzles rather than a replacement for them. It is also the key difference between this PlayStation 2 release and the PSP remake, whose additions focused on the level editor, downloadable content support and portable play rather than camera interaction. Older Lemmings ports followed the original game’s conventional skill-assignment format and did not include these EyeToy-specific stages.
