About

Medal of Honor: Vanguard for PlayStation 2 is a World War II first-person shooter published by Electronic Arts in March 2007. Developed by EA Los Angeles, it returns the long-running Medal of Honor series to the European theater and places the player in the boots of Corporal Frank Keegan, an American paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne Division. The PS2 game presents a campaign built around airborne operations and ground combat, following Keegan and his fellow soldiers as Allied forces push through occupied Europe.

The campaign opens during Operation Husky in Sicily in 1943, where Keegan is dropped into combat after a chaotic approach to the island. Later operations take the player through the Normandy invasion, the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden, and the Rhine crossing associated with Operation Varsity. These chapters use real World War II operations as their backdrop while telling a fictional squad-level story. Keegan’s changing role within the airborne forces gives the campaign a sense of movement from one major Allied operation to the next.

Vanguard is played from a first-person viewpoint with the PlayStation 2 controller handling movement, aiming, firing, reloading, crouching, and weapon attacks. Missions mix infantry firefights with objectives such as clearing defended positions, destroying artillery or armored targets, rescuing stranded soldiers, and reaching extraction or rally points. American and enemy weapons are part of the equipment available in the field, and some levels allow attachments that alter a weapon’s use, including a telescopic sight for the M1 Garand or a drum magazine for the Thompson. Ammunition, cover, and the position of hostile soldiers all matter as battles move from villages and churches to bunkers, bridges, trenches, and industrial sites.

Airborne insertion is the game’s defining feature. At the beginning of most operations, Keegan parachutes toward the combat zone and the player can steer him toward a preferred landing area rather than simply starting at a fixed point. Landing near green smoke can provide ammunition or weapon upgrades, and a different touchdown location can change the immediate route into an objective. The Normandy chapter varies the formula with a glider landing instead. Once on the ground, the game settles into a linear mission structure, but the drop sequence adds a tactical choice before the shooting starts.

The single-player story keeps Keegan alongside computer-controlled members of his unit, with combat often asking the player to fight through a position while the squad advances or holds ground. The campaign’s World War II setting covers Italian and German opposition across Sicily, France, the Netherlands, and Germany, emphasizing the airborne forces’ role behind enemy lines. It is a focused PS2-era shooter rather than a vehicle-combat game: tanks and other defenses are threats to overcome on foot, including with bazookas and planted explosives.

Medal of Honor: Vanguard also includes local split-screen multiplayer for two to four players. The PS2 version needs a Multitap for more than two participants, and its competitive options are Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, and Scavenger Hunt. There is no online multiplayer in this release. Vanguard arrived on PlayStation 2 alongside a Wii version, with the same core campaign and modes but Wii Remote-based controls on Nintendo’s console. For PS2 owners, the game is a late entry in the series that combines its familiar World War II first-person action with player-directed parachute drops and couch multiplayer.
