About

Ghostbusters: The Video Game for PlayStation 2 is a 2009 action-adventure game from Red Fly Studio, published by Atari in North America and by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in Europe. Based on the Ghostbusters films, it places the player in the proton pack of a newly recruited member of the New York ghost-catching team. Its story begins two years after Ghostbusters II, at a point when Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore are once again confronting a surge of supernatural trouble across the city. The PS2 edition is part of the separately developed, stylized line that also reached Wii and PSP, rather than a direct conversion of the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows game.

The campaign turns the player into the Ghostbusters' experimental-equipment tester, nicknamed the Rookie. Guided by the established team, the Rookie investigates hauntings, searches environments, battles hostile spirits, and carries out the essential Ghostbusters job of trapping them. A Proton Pack supplies the main tools: the proton stream wears down a ghost, then the capture stream lets the player steer it toward a deployed trap. It is not simply a matter of firing constantly; the pack can overheat, so timing its use and keeping control of a moving target are central to each encounter.

As cases are completed, the Rookie gains access to more ways to handle paranormal threats. The equipment includes alternate Proton Pack functions such as the Shock Blast, Slime Blower, and Meson Collider, with additional uses that broaden the options available in fights and environmental situations. The PKE Meter and goggles shift the focus from direct combat to investigation, helping locate supernatural activity and hidden haunted objects. Finding and identifying those artifacts, along with cataloguing ghostly species, supports the game’s progression and makes the player’s equipment feel like part of the Ghostbusters' research as well as its field work.

The adventure revisits familiar New York locations and figures from the films while building a new occult mystery around rising psychic energy. Slimer, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Janine Melnitz, and former EPA adversary Walter Peck all appear, and the story sends the team through places including the Sedgewick Hotel, the New York Public Library, and the Museum of Natural History. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton reprise their respective film roles, giving the game an unusually direct connection to the original cast. Aykroyd and Ramis also contributed to the script work, which helps the game frame its original scenario as a continuation of the earlier films rather than a retelling of them.

Red Fly Studio designed the PS2 version around a cartoon-like visual style and gameplay structure suited to the system, while retaining the broad premise, major settings, and much of the dialogue shared with the other 2009 versions. The campaign differs from the high-definition edition in presentation and in individual gameplay details, so it should be regarded as its own take on the same Ghostbusters story. On PlayStation 2, the right analog stick is used for camera control, while the ghost-slam interaction uses an analog-stick sequence rather than the Wii Remote-based approach of the Wii release. The PS2 game is single-player; the Wii counterpart is the version in this branch that added split-screen story co-op.

For Ghostbusters fans, Ghostbusters: The Video Game on PS2 offers a chance to operate the series' iconic tools in a platform-specific adaptation of its 2009 return. Its combination of paranormal investigation, proton-pack combat, trapping, equipment upgrades, and film cast performances gives the Rookie a place beside the original Ghostbusters while New York faces another supernatural crisis. It also represents the final game in the release’s stylized PS2, Wii, and PSP family, a companion version whose design remains distinct from the later remaster based on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows edition.
