About

Manhunt is a third-person stealth action game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. Its original release was for PlayStation 2 in North America on November 18, 2003, with other versions arriving later. The PS2 edition establishes the game’s compact, scene-based structure: instead of an open city to freely explore, it moves through a sequence of tightly directed survival scenarios set around the fictional Carcer City.

Players control James Earl Cash, a death-row prisoner who wakes after what appears to have been his execution. An unseen figure calling himself the Director contacts Cash through an earpiece and offers him a way out, but only if he follows orders while being filmed. Cash is sent through neglected districts and enclosed locations in Carcer City, where hostile groups are looking for him. The premise makes the player’s objective a pressured escape rather than a conventional heroic mission.

Stealth is the foundation of the gameplay. Cash is often outnumbered, so rushing into a confrontation can quickly put him at a disadvantage. Dark areas provide places to stay concealed, while careful movement and attention to an enemy’s position create opportunities to pass by or set up an ambush. The game’s third-person view keeps the immediate space readable while encouraging players to plan around patrol routes and limited visibility.

Sound is as important as sight. Cash can make noise against nearby objects to draw a hunter’s attention, then move back into cover before the target investigates. This gives many encounters a simple but purposeful rhythm: create a distraction, wait for a gap, and choose when to move. The same environments can feel quite different depending on whether the player remains quiet, uses a distraction, or starts an open fight.

When close-range action is necessary, Manhunt uses a lock-on execution system with several timing levels. A quick action ends an encounter rapidly, while holding the input longer changes the result and affects the scene’s performance evaluation. The mechanic is presented as part of the game’s harsh staged-survival framework, but it also serves a practical stealth purpose by rewarding a patient approach from behind rather than prolonged direct combat.

Cash begins with improvised tools and can find melee weapons such as bats, crowbars, and bladed items as the scenes progress. Firearms become available in later situations, changing the pace from concealment and positioning to more exposed confrontations. Health-restoring items and a sprint stamina meter add further resource management, so even brief pursuits require consideration of cover, distance, and the safest route forward.

The campaign contains 20 main scenes, with additional bonus scenes unlocked through strong performance. Each completed scene receives a star rating based on factors including completion time and the player’s methods, with higher ratings opening extra material. This scoring system encourages replaying individual scenes to improve a route, meet the time target, or approach encounters more efficiently.

Manhunt is a distinctly early-2000s PlayStation 2 release built around atmosphere, constrained spaces, and deliberate stealth. Its later Windows and Xbox releases arrived in April 2004, but the PS2 version is the original platform context for Cash’s journey through Carcer City. Players interested in the game should expect a mature, tense experience whose design emphasizes observation, timing, and escape under pressure.
