About
Armored Core 3 for PlayStation 2 is a 2002 mech-combat game developed by FromSoftware. Released in Japan in April 2002, with Agetec publishing the North American edition that September and Metro3D handling the European release in 2003, it is the sixth Armored Core game and the third numbered entry. It starts a new continuity rather than continuing the preceding PlayStation and PlayStation 2 stories, returning the series to a devastated Earth where people survive in the underground settlement of Layered.
The player is a Raven: an independent pilot who operates a towering Armored Core, a combat machine assembled in the garage from interchangeable components. Jobs arrive through the neutral Global Cortex organization and place the Raven amid disputes involving corporations such as Mirage, Crest and Kisaragi, as well as the Union resistance. Briefings frame the objectives, while the campaign gradually brings the stability of Layered and the authority of its controlling artificial intelligence into question.
Missions are the backbone of Armored Core 3 PS2. Contracts can ask for reconnaissance, target elimination, defense, infiltration or the destruction of enemy machines, and completing them earns credits. Those payments are not simply a reward: ammunition and repair expenses are deducted after operations, so a costly loadout or a damaged machine can reduce the profit available for the next upgrade. The structure makes preparation meaningful, asking players to select equipment suited to the assignment instead of treating every sortie as the same kind of battle.
The garage offers the series' broad mechanical customization. A player can build around different head, core, arm and leg parts, then tune a machine with components including boosters, generators, radiators and fire-control systems. Weapon choices extend across arm and back mounts, while paint and an emblem give each completed design an individual identity. Armored Core 3 also introduces detachable weapons, allowing a pilot to shed equipment during a mission to lighten the unit and change its handling, and Consorts can provide computer-controlled assistance on selected operations.
Away from the main contracts, the returning Arena provides one-on-one fights against other Ravens. Victories improve the pilot's standing and can supply credits or parts, giving the mode a clear role in a larger build rather than making it a detached exhibition option. The PlayStation 2 game also supports local versus play for up to four participants, using split-screen or linked consoles, plus computer opponents. A compatible USB mouse can be used when creating emblems, another small feature that supports the game's emphasis on personal machine design.
Armored Core 3 occupies the beginning of the PS2-era storyline that was followed by Silent Line: Armored Core and later continued through Nexus, Nine Breaker and Last Raven. It should not be confused with the 2009 PlayStation Portable release, Armored Core 3 Portable, which added features such as widescreen presentation and ad hoc multiplayer. The original PS2 version remains a mission-driven entry built around a practical cycle of accepting contracts, managing operating costs and refining a custom Armored Core for the next sortie.
