About
Jak II is a 2003 PlayStation 2 action-platformer developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It follows Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, but takes the series from the bright landscapes of its first adventure to the dense, authoritarian Haven City. Released in North America on October 14, 2003, it was called Jak II: Renegade in Europe and Australia, while Japan received it as Jak and Daxter II. The game keeps the series’ animated characters and athletic platforming while building a substantially darker science-fantasy story around a newly vocal Jak.
The story begins after Jak, Daxter, Keira, and Samos use a Precursor device in search of a way home. Jak and Daxter are separated from their friends and arrive in a future Haven City ruled by Baron Praxis and his Krimson Guard. Captured soon after arriving, Jak is subjected to Dark Eco experiments for two years before Daxter helps him escape. The ordeal gives Jak the ability to take on a powerful Dark Jak form, and the pair become involved with the Underground resistance while searching for their missing allies and confronting the city’s political and supernatural threats.
Haven City is the game’s central hub. Rather than selecting isolated worlds from a map, players take missions from characters in different districts and travel through a connected urban setting. The city’s elevated streets carry hover vehicles that Jak can commandeer, while later access to the Jet-Board adds another way to cross ground quickly and tackle its own movement challenges. Objectives range across platforming routes, combat arenas, races, escort work, shooting sequences, and specialized vehicle or machinery missions. Missions often send the player from the city to wastelands, industrial sites, ruins, sewers, and other areas beyond its walls.
Jak retains a broad set of physical moves, including jumping, double-jumping, rolling, punching, spinning, and more forceful attacks that help link traversal and combat. The major new tool is the Morph Gun, which can use several weapon modifications for different situations. Its firing modes make ranged combat a regular part of the adventure alongside Jak’s close-range moves. Dark Eco collected from enemies can fill a meter; when it is full, Dark Jak can be activated for especially destructive attacks. Defeated Metal Heads also yield Skull Gems, which can be exchanged to expand Dark Jak’s capabilities.
Daxter remains Jak’s fast-talking companion and a counterpoint to the more serious direction, while the supporting cast includes Keira, Samos, Torn, Ashelin, Krew, and the enigmatic Kor. The plot connects Haven City’s struggle to the earlier game’s Precursor mysteries, Dark Eco, and the Metal Heads, so its campaign works as both a sequel and a broader turning point for the series. Cutscenes carry much of that progression, and the game’s more assertive version of Jak gives the group a different dynamic from the silent hero of The Precursor Legacy.
Naughty Dog designed Jak II as a major expansion of the series’ scope on PS2. Its city joins a hub-based structure to the series’ established platforming, while hovercar travel, gunplay, Dark Jak powers, and the Jet-Board create a mix of activities within one campaign. The game supports one player and is known for demanding missions and limited margins for error, making learning routes, weapons, and movement options important. It was followed on PlayStation 2 by Jak 3 in 2004, and Jak II later returned in the Jak and Daxter Collection for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita as well as in later PlayStation releases.
