About
Ikki Tousen: Shining Dragon is a PlayStation 2 action game based on the Ikki Tousen franchise, known internationally in some markets as Battle Vixens. Developed by DreamFactory and published in Japan by Marvelous Entertainment, it first arrived on July 26, 2007; the budget-priced Best Collection edition followed on August 7, 2008. The game draws on the Dragon Destiny era of the animated series, placing its high-school fighters in an original adventure rather than simply retelling an episode.
The setting follows the series' central idea of students who carry the destinies of figures from China's Three Kingdoms period. Their schools compete for power, and the combatants confront that inherited fate in battle. Hakufu Sonsaku, Ryomou Shimei, and Kanu Unchou are among the characters at the center of Shining Dragon, with other familiar fighters joining the roster. The game also introduces Chosen, an original character whose connection to the Three Kingdoms-inspired cast gives the story a new adversary and a new focus for its conflicts.
Rather than presenting a conventional one-on-one tournament fighter, Ikki Tousen: Shining Dragon uses 3D action battles. Players guide a chosen heroine through enclosed combat areas, meeting groups of enemies before facing stronger opponents. Movement, close-range attacks, and character-specific techniques shape these encounters, so success depends on keeping control of the arena while building openings against a boss. Its battles aim to translate the anime's exaggerated clashes into direct, playable scenes on the PS2.
Story Mode lets players follow character-specific routes through material written for the game. Choosing a fighter changes the perspective on the wider conflict and gives regular characters room to take part in scenarios outside the television series. The Japanese voice cast contributes battle dialogue and voiced scenes, reinforcing the connection to the anime adaptation. For fans of the license, that emphasis on recognizable performers and personalities is as much a part of the presentation as the fighting itself.
Mission Mode supplies a separate set of challenge-based fights. Its 50 missions vary the conditions, asking the player to defeat enemies, work within a time limit, survive restrictive conditions, or take on boss-focused encounters. This structure turns the game's basic combat system into a series of compact tests and provides goals beyond the narrative routes. Additional characters can be made available for these modes, expanding the selection beyond the initial story leads.
Shining Dragon also carries over one of Ikki Tousen's most conspicuous visual motifs: combat can visibly damage a character's outfit. The effect is part of the series' fan-service presentation, while the game remains a CERO C-rated Japanese PS2 release aimed at players aged 15 and over. As the first console game based on the franchise, it established a videogame branch that later continued with the PSP titles Ikki Tousen: Eloquent Fist and Ikki Tousen: Xross Impact. For players exploring licensed PS2 action games, it captures a specific mid-2000s attempt to turn an anime's cast, voice talent, and dramatic rivalries into character-led arena combat.
