About

GrimGrimoire PS2 is a 2D real-time strategy game developed by Vanillaware for PlayStation 2. It debuted in Japan in April 2007, followed by a North American release from NIS America in June and a European release from Koei in September. The game places tactical battles inside a richly illustrated fantasy academy, pairing a side-on battlefield view with a story about a new witch confronting a disaster at her school. Although its database title is styled GriMgRiMoiRe, the original release is titled GrimGrimoire.

The story follows Lillet Blan, a promising young witch who arrives at the Tower of Silver Star to study magic. Her early days introduce the tower's eccentric teachers, fellow pupils and rival schools of magic, but the routine collapses when a threat overwhelms the academy. Lillet is returned to the beginning of her first day after the tower's catastrophe, forcing her through a repeating five-day span. Each new cycle lets her approach familiar events with more knowledge and uncover another part of the tower's hidden history.

Between animated story scenes, Lillet commands magical forces in real time. Battles take place across multi-level, side-scrolling interiors whose unexplored areas are concealed by fog of war. Rather than directly fighting as a single hero, she establishes magical runes, raises grimoires and summons familiars to defend positions, gather resources and press toward an objective. Orders include moving, attacking, defending, healing, patrolling and gathering, while the pause function allows commands to be issued without the battle continuing underneath them.

Mana is the foundation of the game's economy. It is gathered from crystals and spent to create runes and call out familiars, so building an effective force requires attention to both territory and resources. Grimoires can be improved to open stronger summons, and different scenarios ask for more than a simple rout: some require survival, defense or other mission-specific goals. The game also includes optional challenge stages alongside its narrative campaign, giving its compact real-time strategy system a separate place to test learned tactics.

GrimGrimoire organizes its units around four magical disciplines: Glamour, Alchemy, Necromancy and Sorcery. Their opposing strengths encourage counterplay rather than reliance on a single army, while their familiars differ in cost, movement and battlefield role. A player might need inexpensive units to secure mana, sturdier forces to hold a floor, or specialized attackers to answer an enemy school. This structure translates real-time strategy ideas to a controller-led PlayStation 2 game without abandoning the genre's emphasis on scouting, production and timing.

The original PS2 release is a single-player game and an early Vanillaware production, arriving in the same year as Odin Sphere. Its hand-drawn characters and theatrical, 2D presentation set it apart from the era's more conventional military strategy games, while its school-of-magic setting gives the campaign a mystery that advances alongside the tutorials and battles. GrimGrimoire was later revisited in the expanded 2022-2023 remaster GrimGrimoire OnceMore for newer systems; that is a separate release with additional features, not the PlayStation 2 version described here.
