About
BloodRayne for PlayStation 2 is a single-player third-person action game developed by Terminal Reality and released in 2002. In North America it arrived through Majesco, while Vivendi Universal Games handled publishing in some other territories. It introduced Rayne, a dhampir--part human and part vampire--whose work for the secretive Brimstone Society takes her into a pulp-horror vision of the 1930s. The PS2 game mixes gunplay, close-range attacks, platforming and supernatural powers as Rayne investigates threats tied to occult experiments and the rise of Nazi Germany.
The campaign is built around moving Rayne through large, hostile locations from an overrun Louisiana town to an Argentine mine and a German castle. Enemies range from armed soldiers to grotesque supernatural creatures, so encounters ask the player to combine her wrist-mounted blades with firearms found during missions. The PlayStation 2 controller layout keeps movement, camera handling, aiming, jumps and attacks at the center of play, while Rayne can target opponents and switch between melee and ranged fighting as the situation changes.
Blood is central to BloodRayne's combat system as well as its subject matter. Rayne can feed on weakened human opponents to restore health, but not every target is safe to drain and the player must watch her condition in the middle of a fight. Her dhampir abilities also include heightened senses: Aura Vision can help identify important people and points of interest, while other powers develop as the story advances. The result is an action loop that rewards clearing rooms, seeking ammunition and health, and using Rayne's mobility and powers rather than relying on a single weapon.
The story begins in 1933, when Brimstone sends Rayne and her fellow dhampir mentor Mynce to Mortton, Louisiana, to investigate a plague that has turned residents into monsters. A disturbing discovery there leads to a second operation five years later, with Rayne tracking the Nazi occult group Gegengeist Gruppe in Argentina. Their search for ancient relics expands into a race through mines and Castle Gaustadt, where Nazi forces, vampires and demonic creatures collide. These missions give the game its period setting without making the supernatural conflict merely a backdrop to its action.
Although BloodRayne was released for several contemporary systems, the PlayStation 2 version is one of the original 2002 console editions rather than the later PC remaster or the newer BloodRayne: ReVamped release. It is the opening chapter of the BloodRayne series and establishes Rayne, Brimstone and the franchise's blend of stylized horror, historical fantasy and acrobatic combat. Players looking for the original BloodRayne PS2 experience get the standalone first adventure, before the later sequel moved Rayne's story into a different era.
