About

FIFA World Cup: Germany 2006 brings the official 2006 FIFA World Cup to PlayStation 2 as a national-team football game built around the tournament in Germany. Developed by EA Canada and published under the EA Sports label, it arrived in North America in April 2006, shortly before the real competition began. Rather than presenting a club season, it centers on international sides, tournament drama and the long route that leads to football's biggest final.

Players can select from 127 national teams and guide a country through the qualifying process and into the World Cup itself. The game follows the tournament structure used in Germany, making group-stage results, knockout pressure and a final run for the trophy central to its campaign. Friendly matches provide a quicker way to stage international fixtures, while the large team selection lets players create matchups that the real tournament could not deliver.

The PlayStation 2 release uses official FIFA licensing to frame the event with national teams, tournament presentation and recognizable football settings. It includes the 12 stadiums used for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, alongside venues representing the qualifying regions. Regional cover art also varied across markets, with different prominent players appearing on the packaging, reinforcing the game's identity as a global event rather than a standard yearly FIFA installment.

A major extra is Global Challenge, a collection of historical World Cup scenarios that invites players to revisit famous situations from the competition's past and change the outcome on the pitch. The mode contains more than forty scenarios, turning individual matches into short objective-driven challenges instead of simply replaying a full tournament. Progress in single-player and online play earns points for a virtual store, where unlocks include legendary players, footballs, boots, kits and gameplay options.

EA Canada also emphasized player animation and individual style, aiming to give leading international footballers more distinctive movement and likenesses. The result is designed to capture the rhythm of a World Cup match: measured build-up play, attacking breaks, set pieces and the heightened stakes of a national side carrying expectations. Its presentation concentrates on the journey from qualification to the finals, giving every stage a place in the broader competition.

Multiplayer is an important part of the experience, with support for matches involving up to eight players. The original release also offered ranked and unranked online play on supported non-Nintendo versions, plus lobbies, leaderboards and online Global Challenge activity; those official servers were later shut down in September 2007. Local PlayStation 2 competition remains the lasting way to use the game as a couch football title, whether replaying the 2006 field or creating an alternate World Cup story.

Critics generally received the PlayStation 2 version favorably, according to Metacritic's contemporary aggregation, and Famitsu scored it 31 out of 40 in Japan. The game sold 2.8 million copies across its releases, marking it as a successful event tie-in from the long-running FIFA series. For PlayStation 2 players, FIFA World Cup: Germany 2006 is a focused snapshot of the 2006 tournament era, combining a large international roster, official World Cup atmosphere and challenge modes built around football history.
