About

FIFA 07 for PlayStation 2 is EA Sports' 2006 football simulation, developed for the PS2 by EA Canada as part of the long-running FIFA series. Released in late 2006 as FIFA 07 in Europe and Australia and FIFA Soccer 07 in North America, it places licensed clubs, leagues, players and international sides at the center of an annual-season football package. The PlayStation 2 edition belongs to the same generation of versions as the GameCube, Xbox and PC releases, rather than the separately built Xbox 360 edition, so its features and presentation follow the established FIFA formula while refining it for another campaign.

At its foundation, FIFA 07 plays out full association-football matches from a broadcast-style camera view. Players move the selected footballer, pass into space, switch control when defending, attempt tackles, cross from the wings and shoot for goal. The game emphasizes building attacks through possession instead of simply running directly at the net: a short pass can retain the ball, a through ball can release a runner, and a cross or long pass can change the point of attack. Defensive positioning, timing and the choice between a standing challenge and a sliding tackle matter just as much when trying to halt an opponent.

The PlayStation 2 version expanded the range of on-ball options with a new trick system operated through the right analog stick. These moves let a player try to create a yard of space or beat a defender, but they need to be chosen in the flow of a match rather than replacing passing and positioning. FIFA 07 also gives set pieces added possibilities. Free kicks and corners can be shaped with spin, allowing players to vary the path of a delivery or attempt a more carefully placed effort on goal. Distinct player styles and signature moves aim to make recognizable footballers handle the ball differently from one another.

A broad licensed selection supplies the context for exhibition matches, tournaments and longer campaigns. FIFA 07 includes 27 leagues across more than 20 countries, alongside an International group of national teams and a Rest of World section for additional clubs. That range makes it possible to choose between domestic fixtures, international encounters and mixed tournament brackets without leaving the main game. Team and player licensing also helps the season reflect the football landscape of the 2006–07 period, though rosters naturally remain a snapshot of that particular release year.

For players looking beyond a one-off fixture, Manager Mode turns a chosen club into a multi-season project. Results on the pitch are only part of the job: the mode incorporates relationships with the board, supporters and sponsors as the player tries to guide a team through successive seasons. Squad planning and the pressure to meet expectations give the familiar match engine a longer-term purpose. FIFA 07 also offers challenges built around unusual match situations, including comeback scenarios and large-margin targets, providing focused objectives separate from a conventional league schedule.

The PlayStation 2 release supports solo play as well as local multiplayer, including versus and team matches, and it can also use the console's Multitap for larger gatherings. Online features included EA Sports Interactive Leagues, which connected selected real-world competitions to scheduled in-game contests and accumulated results for club supporters. English commentary on the PS2 version pairs Clive Tyldesley with Andy Gray, while crowd noise and club chants seek to make home and away fixtures feel distinct. These details sit alongside the menus, presentation and licensed matchday atmosphere that defined EA Sports football games of the period.

FIFA 07 arrived only months after EA's 2006 FIFA World Cup game, but it returned the series to a full club-and-league structure. It was also one of the final FIFA installments released on several sixth-generation systems, including PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox. For a PS2 football game, FIFA 07 is a record of the series' late-console-generation approach: extensive licensed competition, a tactically minded match engine, analog-stick skills and a manager career all gathered in one season-based package.
