About
Area 51 PS2 is a 2005 first-person shooter developed by Midway Studios Austin and published by Midway. It reimagines the premise of Midway's 1995 arcade light-gun hit as an on-foot, story-driven assault on a secret Nevada installation, rather than a conversion of the earlier rail shooter. The PlayStation 2 release puts players in the boots of HAZMAT specialist Ethan Cole, part of a response team sent inside the facility after a dangerous mutagenic outbreak. What begins as a containment mission becomes a fight through a conspiracy involving alien technology, infected personnel, and the hidden history behind the base.
The campaign is played from Cole's first-person viewpoint. Progression takes him through large sections of the installation and eventually below it, with firefights, exploration, scripted sequences, and environmental discoveries carrying the story forward. Cole relies on conventional firearms, grenades, and recovered extraterrestrial weapons while facing hostile soldiers, infected creatures, and alien threats. Weapons have primary and alternate firing functions, and several can be used in both hands, giving players different ways to approach the close-quarters encounters that fill the base's corridors, laboratories, hangars, and underground areas.
A central mechanic separates Area 51 from a straightforward military shooter: Cole becomes infected during the operation. The condition gradually grants him temporary mutant abilities, trading ordinary human vulnerability for greater strength and special attacks while a limited mutation supply lasts. In this altered state, he can better identify enemies that are otherwise concealed, which makes the transformation useful in combat as well as a narrative expression of the crisis. Health, ammunition, medical supplies, and mutagen resources must be gathered during the mission, so deciding when to use equipment or enter the enhanced form adds another layer to the shooting.
Cole's suit also includes a scanner that can examine selected enemies, documents, and objects in the environment. Using it turns attention away from gunfire and toward the facility's scattered clues, helping fill in details about the outbreak, its personnel, and the forces operating beneath Area 51. Some scanned material contributes to unlockable video content, encouraging players to look beyond the direct route through each area. This investigative element fits the game's mix of science-fiction action and government-cover-up fiction, where strange experiments and classified evidence sit alongside the firefights.
The story draws on familiar Area 51 and Roswell mythology but frames it around Ethan's increasingly personal survival. David Duchovny voices Cole, with Powers Boothe, Marilyn Manson, Nolan North, and Ian Abercrombie among the supporting cast. Their performances accompany a tale of emergency quarantine, alien visitors, human experimentation, and competing agendas within the compound. Creature work associated with Stan Winston Studio also helped give the game's mutants and extraterrestrial enemies a distinct screen-monster character, reinforcing the horror-inflected atmosphere of the descent.
Area 51 on PlayStation 2 was released in North America in April 2005, with Midway announcing the PS2 and Xbox versions' arrival in stores that month. It shared its core campaign with the Xbox and Windows releases, while an announced GameCube version did not reach release. The PS2 edition is notable for offering online multiplayer alongside its solo campaign. Its competitive options supported battles for up to 16 players, including an Infection mode in which a mutant player tries to convert the remaining human players before time expires.
As a 2000s console shooter, Area 51 combines the name recognition of the arcade original with a substantially different structure and tone. It is a loose remake rather than an attempt to reproduce the coin-op's light-gun format, using free movement, a voiced campaign, scanning, dual-wielding, mutation powers, and online modes to build a broader console experience. The game was followed by the loosely related BlackSite: Area 51 in 2007, but this PS2 adventure stands on its own as Midway's conspiratorial trip into the military base's sealed-off depths.
