About

Evil Dead: Regeneration for PlayStation 2 is a 2005 third-person action game developed by Cranky Pants Games and published by THQ. It brings Ash Williams back to the console in a story built as an alternate continuation of Evil Dead II: rather than being carried into the medieval setting of Army of Darkness, Ash is blamed for the carnage at the cabin and confined to Sunny Meadows, an institution for the criminally insane. When the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis is used to unleash evil again, the unwilling hero has another Deadite outbreak to survive. Bruce Campbell returns as Ash, preserving the character’s brash delivery and grimly comic tone.

The PS2 game is structured as a single-player action adventure seen from a third-person camera. Ash advances through enclosed combat spaces, passages, and supernatural locations while cutting through groups of Deadites, then moves on by finding routes, operating mechanisms, or dealing with smaller environmental obstacles. Enemies can be weakened with conventional attacks and finished with context-sensitive moves, giving the fighting a more emphatic conclusion than simply draining a health bar. The campaign favors a direct, arcade-like flow of exploring an area, surviving encounters, and pushing toward the next objective.

Ash’s familiar chainsaw hand and boomstick shotgun are central to the fighting, but Regeneration supplies other firearms and improvised heavy weapons as the adventure unfolds. A pistol provides an early ranged option, while equipment such as a flamethrower, grenade launcher, and harpoon gun changes how players approach particular enemy groups and spaces. The game does not frame its combat around scarce ammunition for these signature tools; instead, its challenge comes from handling persistent attacks, choosing range or close combat, and using the available arsenal at the right moment. A meter charged through combat also lets Ash enter a powerful Evil Ash state for a limited time.

A major feature of Evil Dead: Regeneration is Sam, a small, half-Deadite companion voiced by Ted Raimi. Sam is both a combat helper and an unusually physical puzzle tool: Ash can kick him at foes or toward otherwise unreachable mechanisms, and certain marked locations allow the player to take control of him to pass through small openings. That relationship gives the game a different rhythm from a lone-character hack-and-slash, alternating between Ash’s weapons-heavy battles and short tasks that rely on Sam’s size and supernatural condition. Their dialogue also supports the game’s broad horror-comedy character.

The story begins in the asylum under the supervision of Dr. Reinhard, whose experiments with the Book of the Dead put Ash, Sam, and the outside world in danger. From there, the pair travel beyond Sunny Meadows through locations including catacombs, woods, mines, docks, swamps, and a Deadite-infested town while trying to close the openings feeding the invasion. The game uses familiar series ideas—the Necronomicon, possession, grotesque creatures, and Ash’s reluctant heroics—without retelling one of the films directly. Its premise is separate from the earlier Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick and specifically imagines a different route after Evil Dead II.

Released in North America for PlayStation 2 on September 13, 2005, Evil Dead: Regeneration also arrived on Xbox and Windows, but the PS2 version is the original console edition represented here. It is a mature-rated, one-player adaptation that leans on the series’ blend of splatter-horror imagery and absurd humor rather than treating the license as straight horror. For players exploring PS2 movie tie-ins, it stands out for pairing an original alternate-timeline Ash story with Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi’s performances, a broad weapon set, and a companion mechanic tailored to the game’s Deadite chaos.
