About

Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires for PlayStation 2 is Omega Force and Koei’s 2006 action-strategy entry in the Dynasty Warriors series. Built around the series’ large-scale, one-against-many combat, it shifts the emphasis from a character-led campaign to the work of ruling and expanding a state in ancient China. Players choose from the game’s roster of Three Kingdoms-era officers and attempt to unite a divided land through decisions made on a strategic map and victories earned personally on the battlefield.

Empire Mode divides play between domestic management and war. Each turn begins in a home territory, where the ruler consults officers and chooses policies for the realm. Controlled regions produce revenue, which can support recruitment, troop organization, defenses, equipment, and battlefield preparations. Those choices matter because an expanding state needs capable officers and resources before it can risk an invasion, while a frontier under threat may call for consolidation instead. The mode presents a map of 25 territories to contest and several unlockable scenarios, giving campaigns different starting arrangements and rival powers.

When diplomacy gives way to battle, Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires returns to the direct hack-and-slash action associated with the series. The player takes one selected officer into a 3D battlefield populated by allied and opposing units, using that warrior’s weapon and attacks to cut through crowds, confront enemy generals, and seize the initiative. Winning is not solely a matter of defeating every soldier: protecting friendly positions, taking enemy bases, and responding to the wider situation can affect the path to victory. The PS2 game blends these moment-to-moment fights with the decisions made between them, so a campaign’s political planning and its individual battles continually feed one another.

A major addition to the Empires formula is the ability to issue orders to allied officers in combat. Rather than leaving every friendly general to act entirely on their own, players can direct them to group up, attack, or defend areas of the field. Battlefield measures such as fire attacks and ambushes add further ways to shape an engagement. This makes the role different from that of a lone warrior in a standard stage: players still lead charges themselves, but they also decide which officers and lieutenants take part and how a larger force should be deployed.

The historical backdrop follows the familiar Dynasty Warriors interpretation of the late Han and Three Kingdoms period, drawing on the era’s factions and famous officers while presenting the conflict as a contest to establish an empire. The game is an Empires follow-up to Dynasty Warriors 5 rather than its story-mode expansion, and its structure favors freeform conquest over the parent game’s individual Musou narratives. It also opened more of the roster to player control, including officers who had previously served mainly as supporting non-player characters, broadening the choices available when building a state and its armies.

Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires supports one or two players on PlayStation 2, with split-screen cooperative play available in Empire and Free modes. Alongside music from Dynasty Warriors 5, it includes selections from earlier series entries, linking the release to its PS2 predecessors. Koei later brought the game to Xbox 360 as well, but the PlayStation 2 version remains the original console setting for this combination of territorial management, officer commands, and crowd-clearing action. For players interested in the strategy-focused branch of Dynasty Warriors, it captures an early attempt to make the planning table as important as the battlefield.
