About

Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex is a 2001 platform game developed by Traveller’s Tales and published by Universal Interactive, first released for PlayStation 2 in late 2001. It is a mainline Crash Bandicoot adventure that brought the series to a new generation of consoles before later Xbox and GameCube versions.

After another defeat, Doctor Neo Cortex unveils Crunch Bandicoot, a powerful creation intended to finally dispose of Crash. With Uka Uka’s help, Cortex calls upon the Elementals: rogue mask spirits whose control over earth, water, fire, and air gives Crunch formidable power.

Crash and his sister Coco set out to stop the threat by recovering 25 Crystals. Coco’s Virtual Reality Hub System serves as the route between the game’s worlds, opening new groups of stages as the heroes make progress.

Most stages follow Crash’s familiar forward-moving platforming format, built around running, jumping, spinning enemies away, breaking crates, and avoiding hazards. The adventure also branches into vehicle-focused challenges, including rides in a ball, flights, underwater missions, and other specialized courses that change the pace.

Each hub culminates in a confrontation with Crunch, empowered by one of the Elementals. Defeating him removes another source of the villains’ strength and clears the way to the next set of portals and the eventual clash with Cortex.

Crystals drive the main quest, while Gems reward thorough exploration and Relics invite players to revisit completed levels in time trials. Together with bonus routes and collectible crates, these goals extend the straightforward stage-by-stage campaign beyond simply reaching each level’s finish.

The PlayStation 2 edition sits at the transition from Crash’s original PlayStation trilogy to the wider multi-platform era. Its colorful 3D environments, cartoon villains, mask allies, and mix of on-foot and vehicle levels retain the series’ recognizable rhythm while introducing Crunch as a major new rival.
