About
Darkwatch for PlayStation 2 is a 2005 first-person shooter from High Moon Studios that combines a frontier gunslinger story with vampire horror and steampunk-inflected technology. Capcom published the game in North America, while Ubisoft released it in Europe and Australia. The PlayStation 2 version follows outlaw Jericho Cross, whose attempt to rob a train carrying a dangerous prisoner goes disastrously wrong when the vampire lord Lazarus Malkoth is set free and infects him with a curse.
Jericho is brought into the Darkwatch, a long-standing order that fights supernatural threats, and his hunt for Lazarus carries him through a version of the American West populated by undead enemies and other monsters. The campaign is presented chiefly from the first-person perspective, placing the focus on aiming, moving through hostile locations, and switching weapons as enemy groups close in. Its setting deliberately places gothic imagery and occult danger alongside dusty settlements, railways, frontier forts, and Western-style action.
Combat gives Jericho both conventional firepower and abilities connected to his condition. The arsenal includes the Redeemer handgun, dual pistols, an explosive-bolt crossbow, and heavier weapons such as a rocket launcher; several guns can also be used up close. Enemies leave behind souls that restore health and help power Jericho’s supernatural skills. At night he can use abilities including an enhanced jump, a protective Blood Shield, and Blood Vision, which highlights enemies and objects while functioning as a zoom view.
Darkwatch also makes certain encounters into choices between more protective and more destructive vampiric powers. These decisions unlock Brands aligned with either path, giving Jericho different temporary options when his power meter is full. The campaign therefore links its moral decisions to combat rather than treating them only as dialogue scenes. Daytime sequences remove the character’s vampire advantages, changing the balance toward weapons and standard gunplay until darkness returns.
Not every stage stays on foot. Darkwatch includes mounted combat on Jericho’s undead horse, Shadow, as well as sections involving the armed Coyote Steamwagon. Those sequences change the presentation from the usual first-person shooting to a third-person view, adding pursuits and fixed-direction action to the broader campaign. Jericho’s mission also introduces Darkwatch agents Cassidy Sharp and Tala, whose competing relationships with him accompany the search for Lazarus and lead toward alternate conclusions.
The PlayStation 2 release has local split-screen play, including cooperative access to the story campaign, a feature that distinguishes it from the Xbox edition. Competitive multiplayer is also available locally on PS2, while the Xbox release used Xbox Live for larger online matches. Darkwatch remained a self-contained console release rather than the beginning of the intended sequel series, but its particular blend of first-person shooting, Western fiction, and supernatural powers gives the PlayStation 2 game a clear identity among shooters of its era.
