About
Jak X: Combat Racing is a 2005 PlayStation 2 vehicular-combat racer developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Known simply as Jak X in Europe and Oceania, it is a story-led spin-off set after Jak 3 rather than another action-platforming chapter. Jak, Daxter, Keira, Samos, Torn and Ashelin travel to Kras City for the reading of the late crime lord Krew's will, only to learn that they have been poisoned. Their route to an antidote is the Kras City Grand Championship, where every race is both a contest for the podium and a way to stay alive.
The PS2 game changes the series' usual on-foot exploration into fast arcade driving. Players steer armed racing vehicles around courses built for high speeds, sharp turns, jumps and hazards, while a campaign structure gives the events a continuing narrative. Adventure mode puts Jak at the center of the championship and asks players to earn the points required to progress through its cups and challenges. Exhibition mode offers a more direct way to choose races and events, making it suitable for short sessions away from the storyline.
Circuit races are the most familiar events: finish the required laps ahead of rival drivers while maintaining control in a crowded, dangerous field. Combat is central to that pursuit. Eco pickups provide tools for attack, defense, repair and acceleration, so a race can turn quickly when a driver collects a weapon, activates protection or finds an opening for a turbo burst. The Dark Eco meter grows as cars deal and receive damage; once charged, it strengthens the available weapon effects. This system gives collisions and counterattacks a strategic role instead of treating them as mere setbacks.
Jak X: Combat Racing includes more than traditional lap races. Its championship events and combat-focused challenges use the same vehicle handling and weapon systems in different ways, encouraging players to adjust their approach according to the goal. Vehicles can be customized and have distinct handling characteristics, while Keira supports the team as its mechanic and develops stronger machines as the campaign advances. The result is a racer in which choosing a vehicle, managing pickups and surviving an opponent's attack are as important as taking the cleanest line through a corner.
Kras City gives the game a rougher, more industrial racing setting than the earlier Jak and Daxter adventures. Familiar characters return alongside new competitors and figures tied to the championship, including Krew's daughter Rayn, broadcaster GT Blitz, racer Razer and the mysterious Mizo. The plot uses the tournament to move the story forward: victories reveal more about the people behind the poison and bring Jak's group closer to the final race. That connection to the established cast lets the game retain the series' science-fiction world even as its gameplay moves to the track.
The original PlayStation 2 release also supported local split-screen competition for up to two players and online multiplayer for up to six, in addition to its single-player campaign. Save data from earlier Jak and Daxter games could unlock extra content, and certain crossover characters could be made available through compatible game saves. These features positioned Jak X as both a continuation for series followers and a competitive racer with separate multiplayer options.
Naughty Dog built Jak X: Combat Racing from ideas explored in the driving sections of Jak 3, then focused those ideas into a complete combat-racing game. It arrived in North America in October 2005 and reached several other regions later that year, with the European and Australian releases using the shorter Jak X title. A PlayStation 4 digital re-release followed in 2017. Within the Jak and Daxter catalogue, the game remains the series entry devoted to customizable vehicles, Eco-powered combat and the high-stakes championship in Kras City.
