About

Battletoads NES is a 1991 action game from Rare, published in North America by Tradewest, that combines side-scrolling brawling with demanding platform and vehicle stages. It introduced the Battletoads series and stars the green, wisecracking space heroes Rash, Zitz, and Pimple. The NES adventure sends Rash and Zitz to Ragnarok’s World after the Dark Queen captures Pimple and Princess Angelica. Professor T. Bird supplies mission briefings as the pair push through the villain’s defenses toward her tower.

Most of Battletoads is built around advancing through hostile areas, clearing enemies, and staying alive amid environmental traps. One or two players can take control, and the toads punch, headbutt, run into opponents, pick them up, and throw them. Successful attack strings can trigger deliberately exaggerated finishing blows, with oversized fists, boots, and other cartoon transformations giving the combat its identity. Flies restore health, while the limited lives and continues make careful movement as important as winning a fight.

The NES game refuses to stay in one genre for long. Its opening canyon establishes the brawling format against the Dark Queen’s strange army, but later levels shift to vertical climbs and descents, precision platforming, swimming, and fast obstacle courses. Turbo Tunnel is the best-known example: players steer a Speed Bike through a rapidly approaching series of walls and gaps, relying on timing and memorized routes. Other challenges put the toads on a Space Board, in the Toad Plane, or aboard a one-wheeled Clinger-Winger while the action changes around them.

That variety also shapes how controls are used. In a conventional combat area, positioning and the available attacks matter most; during a ride sequence, avoiding hazards becomes the priority. Some stages add their own tools or movement rules, such as ropes, platforms, springs, walls, and temporary weapons left by enemies or found in the environment. Boss encounters punctuate the journey, from towering machines to the Dark Queen’s commanders, before the final confrontation. The two-player mode offers cooperative play, although the hard stages demand that partners keep pace and avoid getting in each other’s way.

Rare gave Battletoads NES a cartoon sci-fi setting full of grotesque enemy designs, slapstick violence, and animated transformations. The original North American NES release arrived in 1991, followed that year by a Japanese Famicom edition distributed by NCS; the Japanese version made some gameplay adjustments that eased the challenge. The game later reached several other systems, but those adaptations should not be confused with the original NES release. In particular, the 1991 Game Boy game called Battletoads is a different adventure, while Battletoads in Ragnarok’s World is the Game Boy version based on the NES game.

Battletoads became a defining early-1990s Rare release in part because of its wide range of level styles and famously severe difficulty. There is no password or save system in the original NES cartridge, so progress depends on learning patterns and making the most of each run. Its success led to further Battletoads games, including Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and Battletoads & Double Dragon. The original also returned as one of the 30 games in the 2015 Xbox One collection Rare Replay, preserving this frantic blend of brawler, platformer, and obstacle-course design for a later audience.
