About
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey for Nintendo DS is a single-player science-fiction role-playing game from Atlus, released in Japan in 2009 and North America in 2010. Part of the wider Shin Megami Tensei series, it moves the series’ demon-filled supernatural conflict away from its familiar urban backdrops and into Antarctica. A United Nations strike team is dispatched when the Schwarzwelt, an expanding black anomaly at the South Pole, threatens the entire planet. Players name and guide a member of the Red Sprite crew as the expedition crosses into this hostile, otherworldly space.
The adventure is built around first-person dungeon exploration. The Nintendo DS top screen presents the 3D corridors, rooms, doors, hazards, and enemy encounters, while the bottom screen displays a map that gradually fills in as the party travels. Mapping and managing a route through each sector are central to progress, since blocked passages, traps, and environmental obstacles can send the crew looking for new tools or alternate paths. The protagonist’s Demonica protective suit is more than a visual marker of the Antarctic mission: its installed apps support exploration and can open access to areas that were previously out of reach.
Battles are turn-based and pit the protagonist plus up to three allied demons against hostile groups. The human lead can use equipment including firearms, swords, armor, and ammunition, while the demon party supplies elemental attacks, healing, status effects, and other skills. Strange Journey uses its Demon Co-op system to reward exploiting an opponent’s weakness: an aligned ally can join the attack with a powerful follow-up. Party building matters both inside and outside combat, as enemies can be approached through conversation. Successful negotiations may earn items, money, or a new demon recruit, and recruited demons can then be fused into different allies with inherited abilities.
The Schwarzwelt’s zones turn the expedition into a confrontation with the destructive tendencies that created the crisis. Commander Gore, soldier Jimenez, scientist Zelenin, and the Red Sprite’s computer Arthur accompany the unnamed protagonist through a story that places human survival, environmental damage, control, and freedom in conflict. Player decisions gradually influence the game’s Law, Neutral, and Chaos alignment paths, which shape demon relationships and lead to different conclusions. This moral framework gives the journey a branching narrative dimension without changing its focus on exploration, negotiation, and carefully chosen demon teams.
Developed by Atlus with Lancarse and published by Atlus, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey combines long-running Megami Tensei ideas—demon recruitment, fusion, alignment choices, and challenging turn-based encounters—with a distinctly space-age presentation. Kazuma Kaneko served as producer and character and demon designer, while Shoji Meguro composed the score. Its Nintendo DS design makes particular use of the system’s two screens for dungeon navigation and menus. The original game is separate from the later Nintendo 3DS remake, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux, which adds new content and presentation changes; this version is the 2010 Nintendo DS release.
