About

Ys V Expert is the 1996 Super Famicom action RPG revision of Nihon Falcom's Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand. Published in Japan by Koei on March 22, 1996, it returns players to the fifth numbered Ys adventure and its desert setting. Red-haired traveler Adol Christin arrives in the port town of Sandria on the Afrocan continent, where stories of the vanished kingdom of Kefin and its alchemical riches set an expedition in motion. Expert follows the same central journey as the 1995 release while reshaping it for players seeking a more demanding challenge.

Like the original Super Famicom game, Ys V Expert presents its fantasy world from an overhead viewpoint. Adol travels between towns, open fields, caves, ruins, and the lands tied to Kefin's mystery, speaking with residents, gathering equipment, and confronting monsters in real time. It is a notable entry in the early Ys series because it moves away from the contact-based fighting associated with several predecessors: sword attacks are performed with a dedicated button. The controls also allow Adol to jump and raise his shield, making position, timing, and the varying heights of the terrain part of both exploration and combat.

The adventure's magic is built around alchemy. By collecting elemental materials and combining them into refining stones, Adol can prepare magical effects for compatible weapons. This system sits alongside conventional swordplay rather than replacing it, and the game tracks physical and magical growth separately according to how the player fights. Weapons, armor, and shields can improve Adol's capabilities as the route through the desert region opens up, while jumps help him negotiate gaps and changes in elevation.

The story centers on Kefin, a kingdom said to have prospered through alchemy before disappearing centuries earlier. Adol's search draws him into the affairs of Sandria, Foresta Village, and the people connected to the missing city, including merchant Dorman, Niena, Willy, and the Ibur Gang. The quest for elemental crystals gradually reveals why Kefin vanished and why its alchemical knowledge remains dangerous. This gives Ys V Expert a self-contained adventure within Adol's travels while still introducing Terra, a character who later appears in Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim.

Ys V Expert's defining change is its tougher game balance. Enemy parameters and encounters were adjusted to raise the challenge that some players found lacking in the first version. The revision also includes a hidden, 20-floor bonus dungeon and a special Time Attack mode built around successive boss battles. These additions do not replace the main scenario; they provide extra objectives and a concentrated test of the combat system for players who have already explored Kefin.

The release occupies an interesting place in Ys history. The original Ys V was developed internally by Falcom for the Super Famicom, and its manual attacks, jumping, elevated landscapes, and equipment-linked elemental magic marked a new direction after the earlier top-down games. Ys V Expert preserves that transition while refining its difficulty and adding optional content. It remained a Japan-only Super Famicom release, distinct from the later 2006 PlayStation 2 remake, whose revised presentation and systems are not the version represented here.
