About
Mega Man ZX Nintendo DS is a 2D action-platform game developed by Inti Creates and published by Capcom. Released in Japan in 2006 and in North America in September of that year, it begins the Mega Man ZX branch of the long-running series after the Game Boy Advance Mega Man Zero games. The story is set in a distant future where humans and Reploids coexist, their differences blurred by technology, but renewed Maverick incidents threaten the fragile peace. Players choose either Vent or Aile, two young couriers working for Giro Express, and follow their journey from a routine delivery into a conflict over powerful living artifacts called Biometals.
The adventure starts when the courier team is attacked while transporting Biometal Model X. Contact with the artifact allows the chosen hero to Megamerge into Mega Man Model X, combining a human body with armor and weapons based on a legendary hero. With help from Prairie and the Guardians, a force investigating Maverick activity, the protagonist searches for the source of the attacks. The story brings together Giro, the proprietor who raised the young courier, the Slither Inc. president Serpent, and the dangerous Reploids Prometheus and Pandora. Its central threat is Model W, an ominous Biometal connected to the disturbances spreading across the world.
On the Nintendo DS, Mega Man ZX keeps the fast side-scrolling action associated with Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero. The hero runs, jumps, dashes, climbs, shoots, and uses close-range attacks while crossing enemy-filled areas. Missions are accepted from a computer, but the player is not simply led from one separate stage to the next: areas link into a connected world, so locating destinations, revisiting routes, and using newly earned powers form an important part of progress. Health upgrades, recovery tanks, and optional items reward careful exploration alongside the main objectives.
Biometals give the game its defining system. Model X and Model Z combine into Model ZX, while additional models draw on the powers of the Four Guardians from the Zero series. Each form changes the hero’s weapons and movement options: one emphasizes speed and air dashes, another brings a heavier charge attack, another grants water movement, and another focuses on nimble aerial mobility. These abilities are useful in combat as well as for reaching paths and pickups that were previously inaccessible. The player can also return to the unarmored human form, which is small enough for narrow passages and avoids provoking civilians or certain security systems.
Boss encounters further connect combat and progression. Damaging an enemy’s weak point can end a fight more quickly, but it also reduces the condition of the Biometal recovered afterward; paying for repairs restores its performance. That tradeoff gives repeated fights a practical consideration beyond survival. The DS’s second screen supports the action with information that changes by form, including maps, a radar, and aiming assistance for one model’s controllable projectile path. The original DS cartridge also included optional link features with Mega Man Zero 3 and Mega Man Zero 4 in a compatible Nintendo DS or DS Lite, unlocking extra hidden boss encounters.
Mega Man ZX stands apart from the later Mega Man ZX Advent, which uses different protagonists and a separate transformation concept. The original game is a single-player entry built around Vent or Aile, the six Biometal models, and an interconnected action-platform world. Its character portraits, voiced scenes, animated sequences, and transformation-focused design gave the series a distinctive Nintendo DS identity while continuing the timeline and gameplay ideas established by Inti Creates’ Mega Man Zero work. The game later returned in the Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection, where its dual-screen functions and link content were adapted for newer platforms.
