About

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time for Nintendo DS is a role-playing adventure developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo. First released in North America in November 2005, it is the second entry in the Mario & Luigi RPG series, following Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. The story returns the brothers to the Mushroom Kingdom, but sends them through its past as well: Princess Peach’s trip in Professor E. Gadd’s Cobalt Star-powered time machine goes wrong, and an invading alien force called the Shroobs threatens two eras at once.

Mario and Luigi answer the call by traveling through time holes, where they meet Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. The four heroes work together in a party built around their different sizes and abilities. Players explore towns, castles, forests, and stranger locations in the Mushroom Kingdom’s past, talking with its inhabitants, finding routes forward, and collecting the scattered pieces of the Cobalt Star. The quest to rescue Peach unfolds alongside encounters with Baby Bowser, Professor E. Gadd, Toadsworth, and other familiar Mario characters.

Exploration makes direct use of the Nintendo DS format. The adventure usually plays on the Touch Screen while the upper display supplies a map and status information; the layout changes for menus and battles. The two adult brothers can split from their younger counterparts when a puzzle calls for it, letting the babies reach small openings and operate things their older selves cannot. New field moves and pair-specific actions gradually broaden the ways the group can cross obstacles, activate switches, and navigate each area.

Combat is turn-based, but every turn demands active timing. Each member of the party is assigned a face button, so attacks and evasions require the player to follow enemy cues and press the right button at the right moment. Mario and Luigi fight alongside their baby versions, and coordinated strikes can involve the entire quartet. The game also uses consumable Bros. Items for powerful group attacks; their success depends on carrying out a sequence of timed inputs. Experience points raise the party’s battle statistics, while coins can be spent on recovery items, clothing, and badges that adjust their capabilities.

Partners in Time distinguishes itself from its Game Boy Advance predecessor with its four-character control scheme and its focus on two versions of the Mushroom Kingdom. Rather than continuing the earlier game’s Beanbean Kingdom setting, it builds its adventure around the consequences of time travel, shifting between the present and an invaded past. The Nintendo DS cartridge supports a single-player campaign, and compatible systems can use the Nintendo DS Rumble Pak for vibration feedback. Its European release arrived in early 2006; in Japan it was released as Mario & Luigi RPG 2×2.

As a Mario & Luigi game, Partners in Time combines the series’ comic character interactions with RPG progression, puzzle-led exploration, and battles that reward observation as much as level growth. The Shroobs and their altered Mushroom Kingdom give the adventure its own villainous threat, while the baby-and-adult pairing turns a familiar Mario cast into a four-person team. A later Wii U Virtual Console release made the Nintendo DS adventure available digitally, but its original dual-screen design remains central to how its exploration, maps, and button-based teamwork are presented.
