About
Vigilante 8 for Nintendo 64 is a vehicular-combat game from Luxoflux and Activision, released in March 1999. Set in an alternate mid-1970s American Southwest, it turns an oil crisis into the backdrop for destructive arena battles between the civilian Vigilantes and the mercenary Coyotes. Players choose a driver and a heavily armed vehicle, then take the fight through deserts, refineries, ski country, military installations, and other locations designed for high-speed ambushes.
The single-player Story mode follows the conflict surrounding OMAR, an organization seeking control of the American oil supply. Its hired operative Sid Burn leads the Coyotes in attacks on oil facilities, while trucker Convoy organizes the Vigilantes to stop them. Each driver has a separate path and ending, so playing different members of either faction reveals more of the conflict. Convoy, Sheila, John Torque, Slick Clyde, Dave, Chassey Blue, Sid Burn, Boogie, Loki, Houston 3, Beezwax, and Molo bring their own vehicles and motivations to the campaign.
Combat is built around driving, aiming, and scavenging. Every vehicle begins with a machine gun, and pickups can add weapons such as mines, autocannons, rocket pods, mortars, and homing missiles. A vehicle can carry a limited selection at once, encouraging players to decide which tools suit a particular match. Each driver also has a signature weapon, giving the roster distinct tactical possibilities beyond its different vehicle shapes and handling.
Vigilante 8 rewards more than simply circling an opponent and firing. Directional inputs and button combinations activate stronger special versions of the regular weapons, while successful strings of attacks can produce Whammies. Arenas contain repair wrenches and items that interfere with homing weapons, and several levels include hazards or interactive set pieces. Story objectives can involve more than eliminating rivals, with progress opening additional characters and stages.
The Nintendo 64 edition adapts the game for the console's four controller ports with competitive and team-based multiplayer options, including deathmatch, two-versus-two, and three-versus-one battles. It also offers a two-player Story mode. These local modes let players take the same roster and weapon systems into head-to-head sessions rather than restricting the game to the campaign.
This version adds material not found in the original PlayStation release, including a Story mode for the unlockable Y the Alien and the Super Dreamland 64 fantasy stage. With an N64 Expansion Pak installed, players can select a higher-resolution display option from the pause menu; a further high-resolution mode is accessed by password. The game also supports Nintendo 64 accessories including the Rumble Pak and Controller Pak.
Although Vigilante 8 began as an effort related to an Interstate '76 console conversion, Luxoflux and Activision developed it into its own 1970s-styled action game. The Nintendo 64 release arrived before the series continued with Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense later in 1999. Its mix of named drivers, vehicle-specific attacks, destructible combat spaces, branching character stories, and four-player N64 battles makes it a distinct entry in the era's console vehicular-combat catalog.
