About

Rayman 2: The Great Escape brings Ubisoft’s limbless hero into a fully 3D adventure on Nintendo 64. The Glade of Dreams has fallen to Admiral Razorbeard’s robotic pirate army, which has shattered the world’s energy and imprisoned its inhabitants. After escaping the pirates’ flying ship, Rayman sets out to restore his strength, free his friends, and gather the four masks needed to awaken Polokus, the spirit of the world.

Played from a third-person viewpoint, the Nintendo 64 original moves through a mostly linear chain of expansive stages rather than one continuous world. Rayman jumps across platforms, wall-climbs, swims, and uses his helicopter hair to soften long falls. Purple Lums act as swinging points over chasms, while plums, explosive barrels, rockets, and other stage-specific tools change the rhythm of the platforming.

Combat centers on Rayman’s thrown energy spheres. As the adventure progresses, he regains and improves techniques that let him charge shots, strafe while aiming, and confront the pirates’ mechanical soldiers. The journey alternates these fights with traversal challenges and environmental puzzles, sending Rayman through forests, marshes, caverns, sanctuaries, mines, and the pirates’ heavily fortified territory.

Collecting Yellow Lums is a major part of exploration. Lums reveal pieces of the game’s backstory and also open the way to later areas once enough have been found. Many are locked inside cages with captive Teensies and other resistance members, so searching for breakable cages rewards careful detours as well as progress toward completing each level.

The Nintendo 64 edition is one of the game’s original 1999 releases, alongside Windows. It uses the console’s hardware for its particular presentation: the score is sequenced rather than streamed from a CD, and an Expansion Pak can enable a higher-resolution display. Later ports altered graphics, layouts, or added material, but this version preserves the core early form of Rayman 2’s 3D campaign.

Rayman’s route eventually returns him to the Buccaneer for a final confrontation with Razorbeard and the Grolgoth machine. Along the way, recurring allies including Globox, Ly the Fairy, Murfy, and the Teensies give the quest its storybook character, while optional racing bonuses provide extra challenges for players who clear a level’s Lums and cages.
