About
Diddy Kong Racing for Nintendo 64 is a 1997 racing and adventure game developed by Rare and originally published by Rare. Set on Timber's Island, it puts Diddy Kong among a group of animal racers called on to stop Wizpig, an intergalactic pig wizard who has disrupted the island's tracks. Rather than presenting a simple sequence of cups, the Nintendo 64 game links its races through a 3D island hub and frames progress as a campaign against Wizpig and his guardians.
The player chooses from a roster that includes Diddy, Timber, Pipsy, Bumper, Tiptup, Krunch, Banjo, and Conker. Races can use three very different vehicles: a car for conventional circuit driving, a hovercraft suited to land-and-water routes, and an aeroplane for airborne courses. Each vehicle changes how a course is approached, while steering, acceleration, braking, and power-up use are handled with the Nintendo 64 controller. Zipper pads provide bursts of speed, and bananas collected around a course improve a racer's speed up to a limit; being struck makes the racer drop some of them.
Colour-coded balloons supply the game’s weapons and defensive tools. Red balloons provide missiles, blue balloons give a speed boost, yellow balloons create shields, green balloons set traps, and rainbow balloons produce a magnet effect that pulls a racer toward the competitor ahead. Picking up more balloons of the same colour upgrades the held item twice, making the decision to use an item immediately or build a stronger version part of every race. Courses also reward learning their layout, including alternate routes, pickups, and shortcuts.
Adventure Mode begins at the island hub, where doors, paths, and worlds open as the player earns balloons. Its connected worlds contain regular tracks, boss challenges, trophy races, and hidden objectives in addition to the showdown with Wizpig. Silver Coin Challenges ask players to finish first while locating eight coins placed around a course, and time-trial events offer another reason to revisit unlocked tracks. Completing the main set of challenges eventually opens Future Fun Land and a second adventure with mirrored courses and platinum balloons.
Diddy Kong Racing also supports local multiplayer for two to four players in Versus mode, with cars, hovercraft, and planes available for competition. Four battle variants are unlocked through keys hidden in the adventure: two arenas built around knocking out opponents, an egg-collecting contest, and a banana-collection contest. These options give the Nintendo 64 release a separate social mode while its larger adventure remains designed for a single player to advance through the island.
Released during the Nintendo 64’s 1997 holiday season, Diddy Kong Racing arrived as a Rare-made entry in the Donkey Kong series with a notably broad mix of racing, exploration, boss events, and vehicle types. It also introduced Banjo and Conker to Nintendo 64 players before their later starring roles in Rare games. The original N64 version was later revisited as Diddy Kong Racing DS, but the handheld remake changed the character lineup and added its own features, leaving the Nintendo 64 game as the version built around its original adventure, roster, and multiplayer battles.
