About

WWF No Mercy for Nintendo 64 is a professional wrestling game released by THQ in North America in November 2000. Developed by AKI Corporation, with Asmik Ace Entertainment also credited on the project, it captures the World Wrestling Federation’s turn-of-the-millennium roster and television presentation. It is the final N64 WWF game built on the wrestling system introduced by the team behind WCW vs. nWo: World Tour, and follows WWF WrestleMania 2000. The game combines one-on-one bouts, tag matches and chaotic multi-wrestler contests with a large selection of WWF Superstars and personalities from that era.

Matches are built around striking, grappling and momentum. The Nintendo 64 controller’s A button initiates grapples, B delivers strikes, and directional inputs change the move chosen according to the wrestlers’ positions. Players can run, climb, leave the ring and use the environment as the match rules permit. Successful offense builds the Attitude meter; a full meter lets a wrestler attempt that character’s signature finishing move. Pinfalls, submissions, count-outs and other stipulations make positioning and match type matter, while reversals give defenders a way to turn an opponent’s attack back against them.

Exhibition provides the immediate pick-up-and-play side of WWF No Mercy N64, with up to four participants competing in a single match. Its options include standard singles and tag encounters as well as Royal Rumble, cage, ladder, Iron Man and guest-referee matches. Pay-Per-View and King of the Ring formats provide event-style setups, and Commissioner options allow players to set match rules. Some contests can move beyond the ropes into backstage areas, where the ring-bound format gives way to brawling among interactive surroundings. Controller Pak support preserves created wrestlers, progress and other game data, while the Rumble Pak adds feedback during play.

The principal solo feature is Championship mode. Rather than presenting a single fixed season, it offers routes tied to seven WWF championships. Winning or losing selected bouts, and choices made at story junctions, can change the path through a title chase. Completing a route unlocks that belt for use in Exhibition, where it can be defended in custom matches. Survival mode is another single-player challenge: the goal is to defeat as many successive opponents as possible before being eliminated. Both modes award money for the SmackDown! Mall, an in-game shop that expands the available content.

Creation and customization are a major part of the package. Create-a-Superstar lets players assemble original wrestlers, including female wrestlers, then tailor details such as attire, entrance, moves, abilities, alliances and rivals. The editable WWF roster also supports personal changes to the established characters. Purchases at the SmackDown! Mall unlock additional wrestlers, arenas, costumes and moves, so repeated play opens more ways to arrange a card or build a custom competitor. This depth sits alongside a roster that reflects the WWF’s 2000 period, with names such as The Rock, Steve Austin, Triple H, The Undertaker, Kurt Angle, the Hardy Boyz and the Dudley Boyz.

WWF No Mercy was released for Nintendo 64 only, arriving in Europe later in 2000. Early North American cartridges became known for a save-data fault that could erase progress; THQ offered affected customers an exchange program. The European release also has version differences, including an edition that removes visible blood. Those distinctions make the original release history worth noting, but the core appeal remains the same across versions: a wrestling game structured around accessible grappling controls, extensive match rules, branching championship stories and flexible player-made events. For an N64 library built around local multiplayer, it offers both quick exhibition bouts and long-term solo and creation goals.
