About

The Revenge of Shinobi for the Sega Genesis, known in Japan as The Super Shinobi for Mega Drive, is Sega's single-player side-scrolling action game from 1989. Developed and published by Sega, it continues the story of the 1987 Shinobi arcade game while reshaping it for a home console. The player returns as Joe Musashi, master of the Oboro ninja arts. After the criminal group Zeed resurfaces as Neo Zeed, murders Musashi's master, and abducts his bride Naoko, he sets out alone to dismantle the organization and bring her home.

Each of the game's eight districts is divided into three scenes: two hazardous action stages followed by a boss battle. Joe travels through a modern, globe-spanning assortment of bases, streets, factories, waterfronts, and other enemy strongholds, with platforming as important as combat. The route rewards careful timing around gaps, hazards, moving threats, and opponents that attack from several directions. Reaching the end of a scene with health remaining is only part of the challenge; the game also measures performance and makes shuriken management, stage knowledge, and deliberate movement central to surviving its escalating encounters.

Joe's standard tools are his sword and a supply of shuriken. At close range, the sword dispatches foes directly, while throwing stars give him a useful ranged option. A jump can become a somersault that sends him higher and lets him unleash a spread of eight shuriken in midair. That move can also help him move between layers in certain stages. Rather than using the one-hit structure of the earlier arcade Shinobi, The Revenge of Shinobi gives Joe a life bar, though falls and severe damage still make positioning crucial. Crates tucked into stages may provide health, extra shuriken, additional lives, or other benefits, but not every box is safe.

Ninjutsu gives the game its tactical dimension. Joe can select from four ninja arts, each producing a different effect, from damaging enemies to changing how safely he can handle a difficult situation. Normally, a special technique is limited to one use per life unless another is found, so choosing when to spend it matters. The options let players set the starting shuriken supply and choose among difficulty levels, while increasing difficulty raises enemy pressure and reduces the margin for error. The result is an action platformer built around learning layouts, preserving resources, and using a powerful ability at the right moment rather than treating it as a routine attack.

Although it draws on ninja imagery, its setting combines traditional weapons and martial arts with contemporary cityscapes, firearms, vehicles, and mechanical enemies. Sega's own history describes The Super Shinobi as a Mega Drive-original action game that retained parts of Shinobi's setting and systems but expanded Joe's abilities, ninjutsu, and jumping-focused stage design. The Genesis and Mega Drive release is also notable for Yuzo Koshiro's score, credited separately alongside Sega; the music became one of the game's most discussed features at the time and remains closely associated with this chapter of the series.

Cartridge revisions make The Revenge of Shinobi an unusual game to document. Early releases used bosses and enemies modeled conspicuously after popular film and comic-book characters, and Sega changed several designs in later revisions as licensing and copyright circumstances required. A licensed Spider-Man appearance was present in some versions, while later releases altered it after the license was no longer available. These changes mean that particular cartridge editions and some subsequent reissues do not always show identical enemy designs. Whatever version is played, the 1989 game stands as the Mega Drive/Genesis branch of Shinobi that introduced its own platforming and ninjutsu ideas, later followed by Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master.
