About

Star Wars: Episode I Jedi Power Battles for Dreamcast is a 2000 LucasArts action game built around the events and imagery of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Published by LucasArts, it turns the film’s conflict with the Trade Federation into a fast, side-scrolling adventure for one or two players. The Dreamcast release arrived after the PlayStation original and keeps the journey focused on Jedi action: lightsabers, Force abilities, droids, hazardous leaps and a final confrontation with Darth Maul.

Players begin by selecting a Jedi, with Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Plo Koon and Adi Gallia available from the outset. Each fighter has a different balance of attacks, Force techniques and lightsaber moves, so the same route can feel different depending on the character chosen. Additional characters are earned through play, giving the campaign reasons to revisit its missions. The Dreamcast edition also includes Ki-Adi-Mundi among its unlockable material, a distinction from the earlier console version.

The central loop combines close-quarters combat with platforming. Jedi can run, jump, slash at nearby opponents, block or deflect blaster fire with a lightsaber, and draw on collectible Force power-ups for stronger attacks. Encounters often ask players to clear groups of battle droids and other enemies before moving on, while timed jumps, narrow ledges and vertical routes create a second kind of challenge. The game’s controls make positioning matter: a lightsaber may keep enemies at a distance, but a missed jump can be just as dangerous as a blaster volley.

Its ten stages follow the broad path of The Phantom Menace rather than retelling every scene exactly. The campaign opens amid the Trade Federation’s actions against Naboo and carries the Jedi through locations associated with the film, including Naboo, Tatooine, Coruscant and the battle for Theed. Familiar figures and threats appear along the way, but the focus stays on moving through action-heavy levels rather than on cinematic dialogue. The result is a version of the prequel story designed around successive missions, enemy formations and platforming obstacles.

Local cooperative play is a major part of Star Wars: Episode I Jedi Power Battles on Dreamcast. Two people can take Jedi through the main campaign together, sharing the screen and working through the same fights and jumps. That changes the rhythm of the game: one player can occupy opponents while the other advances, and both must manage difficult stretches of terrain. The Dreamcast release supports one or two players and adds a Training mode for practicing skills as well as a Versus mode for head-to-head character battles.

LucasArts made several improvements for the Dreamcast conversion, including higher-resolution presentation, smoother character animation, revised platforming sections and a 60-frames-per-second performance target. These changes matter for a game that alternates between quick melee clashes and precise movement. The version therefore stands as more than a simple change of hardware: its extra modes and unlockables give Dreamcast owners features beyond the original campaign, while preserving the same essential Jedi-led adventure.

Jedi Power Battles belongs to the wave of games released around The Phantom Menace, when LucasArts was adapting the new Star Wars era into several different genres. Instead of a vehicle game or a conventional film adventure, it presents the setting as a cooperative action-platformer with a roster of Jedi who were not all central to the movie itself. Its mix of lightsaber combat, Force powers, multiplayer and prequel-era locations makes it a distinctive Dreamcast entry for players looking for a 2000 Star Wars game centered on Naboo’s struggle against the Trade Federation.
