About

The Neverhood Dreamcast is a community-made Dreamcast edition of The Neverhood, the surreal point-and-click adventure originally developed by The Neverhood, Inc. and published by DreamWorks Interactive for Windows in 1996. The Dreamcast version runs the original adventure through ScummVM, rather than representing an official Sega Dreamcast release. Its 2022 catalogue date reflects this later homebrew presentation of a game celebrated for a world and cast created with stop-motion clay animation.

Players guide the lanky, silent Klaymen after he awakens inside a strange building in the deserted Neverhood. Exploration is driven by pointing at objects, exits, machines, and characters, then watching Klaymen carry out the appropriate physical action. The goal is to work through the world’s self-contained puzzles, open new routes, and uncover why Klaymen is there. The game generally emphasizes observing rooms and experimenting with their mechanisms over collecting and combining a conventional inventory full of items.

The Neverhood’s setting is a handmade-looking landscape suspended over an apparent void. Its clay sets, props, characters, and animated scenes give even ordinary switches, doors, and machines an unusually tactile presence. Klaymen encounters figures including Willie Trombone and the hostile Klogg as the journey progresses, while recorded story material and the famous Hall of Records provide pieces of the world’s history. The narrative can lead to different conclusions depending on a late choice, giving the final confrontation extra weight.

Puzzles range from environmental contraptions and route-finding to logic challenges, timing sequences, and comic interactive scenes. A player may need to notice a visual cue, learn how an unfamiliar machine behaves, or revisit an area once a new passage has become available. Some situations can end Klaymen’s attempt, so saving and paying close attention are useful. The experience is single-player throughout, with Terry Scott Taylor’s distinctive music helping set the offbeat tone alongside the game’s sound effects and animation.

For Dreamcast owners, The Neverhood Dreamcast is best understood as a homebrew ScummVM port of a cult PC adventure, not as a lost commercial entry in the console’s library. It preserves the original game’s exploratory format and claymation identity on Sega hardware, and the associated Russian release is linked to a fan translation credited to PAROVOZ and Dyadushka Risech. The original game also received a separate Japan-only PlayStation adaptation under the Klaymen Klaymen name, but that release should not be confused with this Dreamcast community edition.
