About
Jet Set Radio is a 2000 Dreamcast action game from Smilebit and Sega, released in North America as Jet Grind Radio. It follows the GG's, a crew of inline skaters who carve through the stylized streets of Tokyo-to while defending their identity and their turf through graffiti.
Each stage combines movement, time pressure, and route-finding. Players skate, jump, grind rails, and link tricks to reach hard-to-access areas, then tag marked surfaces before the clock runs down. Large graffiti spots require directional inputs, while paint supplies scattered around each area keep a run going.
The GG's face rival crews with distinct looks and neighborhoods, as well as an escalating response from Captain Onishima and the authorities. Some encounters are races or technique challenges; others ask the player to outmaneuver a rival and cover them with graffiti. New characters and trials open up as districts are cleared.
A pirate broadcast from DJ Professor K frames the action, mixing gang reports with the game's street-radio atmosphere. The story moves from local turf battles to a conflict with the Rokkaku Group, whose pursuit of a mysterious record draws the crew into a much larger threat to the freedom of Tokyo-to's streets.
Its visual identity is built around bold outlines, flat color, and exaggerated city spaces, giving the Dreamcast game a cartoon-like look in motion. The soundtrack blends original and licensed music across hip-hop, funk, electronic, rock, and other styles, with much of the original score composed by Hideki Naganuma.
Jet Set Radio also includes a graffiti editor for creating custom designs, alongside collectible Graffiti Soul icons and score-focused challenge modes. Its skating system rewards experimentation with shortcuts and vertical routes, while the fixed camera and increasingly intense pursuit make every successful tag feel like a quick escape.
