About

Guilty Gear X Ver. 1.5 for Dreamcast is a 2020 homebrew conversion of the 2003 Atomiswave arcade revision of Arc System Works' 2D fighting game. It should not be confused with the officially released Dreamcast edition of Guilty Gear X from 2000: Ver. 1.5 is the later arcade update, converted to Sega's retired console by megavolt85. Sammy originally published the arcade version outside Japan. The result preserves a fast, stylized one-on-one fighter from the early Guilty Gear era while bringing this particular revision to Dreamcast hardware for the first time.

Matches use Guilty Gear X's four primary attack buttons—punch, kick, slash, and heavy slash—and are fought in rounds, with the aim of exhausting the opponent's life bar. The game rewards both grounded pressure and aerial exchanges, and its chained attacks let players build combinations from normals, special moves, and launch opportunities. This is a competitive fighter built around learning a character's individual range, movement, command inputs, and ways to turn a hit into sustained offense.

A central part of the system is the Tension Gauge. Moving toward an opponent and landing attacks builds Tension, while passive or retreating play can reduce it. Meter enables powerful Overdrive attacks, and a fully stocked gauge can be committed to an Instant Kill attempt, a high-risk option whose failure prevents further Tension gain for the rest of that round. Roman Cancels also allow selected actions to be interrupted, opening room for altered combo routes and pressure rather than leaving every attack to play out unchanged.

The story continues the original Guilty Gear's future-fantasy setting. Reports of a newly discovered Commander Gear, Dizzy, prompt another Holy Knights Tournament, with a large reward promised to anyone who captures her. The pursuit brings the series' rival fighters into the same conflict, including Sol Badguy, Ky Kiske, bounty hunter Jam Kuradoberi, and members of the Jellyfish Air Pirates. Dizzy's situation supplies the narrative thread behind the arcade-style battles without changing the game's focus away from head-to-head play.

Guilty Gear X Ver. 1.5 draws from the cast introduced and expanded in Guilty Gear X, including series regulars such as Sol, Ky, May, Baiken, Faust, Potemkin, Chipp, Millia, Axl, Testament, and Dizzy, alongside newcomers such as Johnny, Anji, Venom, and Jam. Each combatant is defined by a sharply different game plan: weapon reach, fast movement, projectiles, traps, command throws, or unusual movement options all shape how a fight unfolds. Arcade, versus, training, and survival-style play give solo practice and local competition distinct ways to approach that roster.

The Ver. 1.5 revision is more than a different label for the original Dreamcast release. It adjusts character balance, revises some special moves using ideas associated with the later Guilty Gear XX era, and adds the Gatling Select system. At the same time, it remains a Guilty Gear X revision rather than Guilty Gear XX: it does not simply replace X's mechanics wholesale. For Dreamcast players, this conversion is notable for making an Atomiswave-only branch of the game's history playable on the console whose official library had received the earlier version of Guilty Gear X.
