About

Sim City for the ZX Spectrum brings Will Wright's landmark city-building simulation to Sinclair's 8-bit computer. Released in 1990, this version was developed by Probe Software and published by Infogrames for 48K and 128K Spectrum machines. Rather than sending players through fixed levels or a conventional campaign, Sim City puts them in charge of a growing settlement and asks them to turn open land into a functioning city while keeping its finances and residents in balance.

The basic task is to lay out a city with roads, rail links, power lines and zones for residential, commercial and industrial growth. Housing, shops and factories develop in response to the conditions created by the player, so expansion depends on practical connections as well as available power. The challenge is not simply to fill the map: a city needs the right mix of homes, jobs and services if it is to attract people and continue developing.

Public management is a central part of the simulation. The mayor sets tax levels, spends money on civic provisions and must weigh the cost of infrastructure against the income generated by an expanding population. Traffic, power supply, pollution and crime are among the pressures that can affect neighbourhoods. Fires, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes and other disasters can also disrupt a carefully planned city, creating urgent decisions alongside long-term planning.

Sim City on ZX Spectrum presents this broad civic model through an overhead map and a set of construction and information tools suited to the home computer format. Players choose what to build, place it on the map, inspect the condition of their municipality and adjust policy as circumstances change. There is no single prescribed solution; one city may favour compact development and rail transport while another spreads outward with different zoning and budgets.

The Spectrum release is a port of the original SimCity, the game first developed by Will Wright and published by Maxis in 1989. Its appearance on the platform in 1990 made the influential urban simulation available to Spectrum owners through Infogrames, alongside versions for a wide range of contemporary computers. It remains an early example of the open-ended simulation style later associated with the SimCity series: progress comes from observing interlocking city systems, responding to problems and deciding what kind of place to build.
