About

Boulder Dash ZX Spectrum is a 1984 maze-and-puzzle game for the 48K Sinclair machine. Developed for this version by Dalali Software and issued in the United Kingdom by Front Runner, K-Tel’s software marketing label, it adapts First Star Software’s American Boulder Dash. Rockford ventures into hazardous underground caves, seeking jewels while the screen’s dirt, rocks and creatures turn every route into a small physics puzzle.

Each cave is a grid of earth, empty passages, gems, boulders and hazards. Rockford tunnels through removable soil to reach the required jewel total before the clock expires; meeting that quota opens the exit to the next cave. The basic rule is easy to understand, but digging under a rock makes it fall, so a useful opening can instantly become a blocked route or a fatal trap.

The Spectrum game contains 16 caverns, labelled A through P. Players can begin at caves A, E, I or M on the first three difficulty settings, while the two highest settings begin at A. Higher difficulty changes the jewel requirement and time allowance, encouraging players to learn layouts and plan efficient routes instead of simply clearing every accessible piece of ground.

Boulders are both obstacles and tools. Rockford can push a rock across level ground when there is space beyond it, and a falling rock can dispose of a pursuing enemy as well as crush the player. Gems, unstable terrain and hostile creatures therefore share the same confined space: a safe-looking tunnel may become dangerous after a single move, and a carefully timed fall can create the route needed to finish the cave.

Boulder Dash ZX Spectrum is a single-player conversion designed around the machine’s keyboard and common joystick options. It supports the cursor keys, Interface 2 right-port joystick and Kempston interface, giving the player direct four-way control over Rockford’s movement. The port retains the compact, cave-by-cave challenge that made the original distinctive while presenting it for Spectrum owners as a fast sequence of increasingly demanding underground puzzles.
