About

Ghouls 'n Ghosts for ZX Spectrum is the 1989 home-computer conversion of Capcom's 1988 arcade sequel to Ghosts 'n Goblins. Published in Europe by U.S. Gold and converted by Software Creations, it brings Sir Arthur's demon-haunted rescue mission to Sinclair's 8-bit machine. The game is a side-scrolling action platformer built around hostile landscapes, deliberate jumps and the constant danger of losing Arthur's protection at exactly the wrong moment.

The story resumes after Arthur's earlier victory over the forces of the Ghoul Realm. A new attack devastates the princess's kingdom, and Princess Prin-Prin's soul is taken by the enemy. Arthur answers with another journey through undead territory toward the demon ruler's stronghold. The familiar knight, armour and horror-fantasy setting make the Spectrum game immediately recognizable as part of the Ghosts 'n Goblins series, while its campaign has its own stages and adversaries.

Play proceeds through a sequence of hazardous, horizontally scrolling areas. Arthur runs, jumps between platforms and attacks creatures that emerge from the scenery or close in from the air and ground. Graveyard-like terrain, waterways, steep climbs and castle approaches turn simple movement into a persistent test of timing. Enemies and drops can force quick decisions about positioning, since a jump committed in one direction cannot simply be corrected in mid-air.

Arthur begins protected by his armour, but a successful enemy hit strips it away and leaves him in his underwear; another hit ends the current life. That instantly readable system gives every encounter weight. Treasure chests found during the adventure can provide replacement armour or different projectile weapons, changing the range and behaviour of Arthur's attack. The port preserves the series' central balance of advancing carefully, learning the patterns ahead and taking chances when a useful item appears.

The ZX Spectrum version adapts an arcade game designed for more elaborate hardware to a home computer with far tighter audiovisual limits. Software Creations reduced and reworked the presentation for the system while retaining the broad route, monster-filled action and multi-stage quest. The conversion's Spectrum credits include programmer Mike Follin, graphics artist Ben Jackson and musician Tim Follin. It was released for the Spectrum alongside Software Creations conversions for other European home computers, including the Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC.

As a sequel, Ghouls 'n Ghosts raises the stakes beyond merely reaching the end of a stage. The complete quest requires perseverance through the game's later challenges and bosses as well as familiarity with its item and armour rules. Its appeal on ZX Spectrum lies in that compact, unforgiving arcade structure: each screen asks Arthur to judge a landing, avoid a creature or make the most of a weapon before the next danger arrives. For players exploring the platform's late-1980s arcade conversions, it is a key example of U.S. Gold and Software Creations bringing a major Capcom property to the Spectrum.
