About

Space Invaders for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System brings Taito's landmark fixed shooter to a 16-bit home console. Taito released it in Japan in 1994 as Space Invaders: The Original Game, while Nintendo published the version as Space Invaders in North America and Europe during 1997. Rather than remake the famous alien assault into a new kind of shooter, this edition concentrates on the direct, screen-by-screen pressure that made the original arcade game a touchstone: a lone laser base faces rows of invaders steadily marching closer.

Each round puts the player at the bottom of the playfield, able to slide left and right and fire upward at the formation overhead. The invaders move across the screen, drop downward at each edge, and shoot back as the player tries to clear every target before the attack reaches the defenses. Protective barriers provide limited cover, but both enemy fire and the player's own shots gradually carve them away. The formation's pace increases as it thins, so a round that begins with deliberate target picking becomes a rapid test of positioning, timing, and nerve.

The Super NES version presents the familiar rules through several visual treatments modeled after historical Space Invaders arcade displays. Players can choose styles that evoke the stark black-and-white table version, the upright cabinet presentation with a planet backdrop, and other period variations. These options change the surrounding presentation while preserving the simple goal at the center of the game: keep the aliens from overrunning the bottom of the screen, protect the laser base, and build a score through successive waves. The changing pace and the occasional bonus craft give the compact playfield a rhythm that remains easy to understand but difficult to master.

Space Invaders on SNES also adds a split-screen competitive mode for two players. Here, each player battles an independent invasion and races to deal with a shifting field of enemies. Certain colored invaders trigger effects that can disrupt the opponent or alter the pressure on a player's own side, turning quick shooting into a contest of attention as well as reflexes. It is a marked change from taking turns for a high score: both players have active screens, and the best moment to fire at a special target may depend on what it will do across the divide.

This release belongs to the long-running Space Invaders series, which began in Taito's arcades in 1978 and helped define the fixed-shooter format. Its Super Nintendo arrival is best understood as a respectful home version with a competitive extra, not as a sweeping sequel or a modern reinvention. For players seeking Space Invaders SNES gameplay, it offers the classic laser-base-versus-alien-formation loop, period-style arcade looks, and a head-to-head mode that gives one of video games' most recognizable designs a social console twist.
