About

Final Fight on Super Nintendo Entertainment System is Capcom’s 1991 home conversion of its 1989 arcade beat ’em up. Set in crime-ridden Metro City, it begins when the Mad Gear Gang kidnaps Jessica, daughter of newly elected mayor Mike Haggar and girlfriend of Cody Travers. Haggar and Cody answer the ransom threat by taking the fight to the gang, pushing from the slums and subway through the city toward Mad Gear boss Belger. Capcom developed and published this SNES release; it arrived first in Japan for Super Famicom in 1990, then in North America in 1991, with a PAL release following in 1992.

This is a scrolling, single-player street brawler built around moving along a shallow playfield and clearing groups of enemies before advancing. Cody is the balanced fighter, while Haggar brings heavier wrestling-style attacks. Punches and kicks build into strings; a jump supports airborne attacks; and getting close to an opponent enables grabs, strikes, and throws. Pressing attack and jump together triggers a crowd-clearing special move at the cost of some health. Breakable scenery can yield restorative food, score items, or limited-use weapons such as knives, pipes, and swords, giving each encounter a mix of positioning, crowd control, and improvisation.

The SNES cartridge is not the three-character, two-player arcade game. Its character-select screen offers Cody and Haggar only: Guy, the fast Bushinryu ninja from the arcade roster, is absent. The port is also strictly one player, so there is no simultaneous co-op. These limits matter to the feel of the conversion: the original’s team play and the choice among Cody, Haggar, and Guy belong to the arcade release, not this standard Super NES version.

Metro City’s route is likewise condensed for the cartridge. The Industrial Area round is missing, along with its boss Rolento, leaving the surviving journey to move from the early city districts toward the Bay Area and Belger’s headquarters. The game still centers on advancing through Mad Gear territory, fighting ordinary gang members and larger bruisers, then facing bosses at the ends of the remaining rounds. Fewer enemies can be displayed at once than in the arcade version, another practical reduction that changes the size of the crowds without changing the core beat-’em-up structure.

Regional presentation also differs. The North American and European releases alter some enemy names and character depictions, and remove or change several references found in the Japanese version. Those edits are specific to the console releases and should not be mistaken for changes to Final Fight’s central story: Jessica remains the hostage, Haggar and Cody remain the playable rescuers in this version, and Mad Gear remains the criminal force occupying Metro City.

Final Fight Guy is a separate revised Super NES/Super Famicom edition, not an alternate character option hidden in this cartridge. It substitutes Guy for Cody, allowing players to choose Guy or Haggar, but it still lacks two-player play and does not restore the Industrial Area. As a result, neither SNES edition contains the arcade roster intact: the original cartridge has Cody and Haggar, while Final Fight Guy has Guy and Haggar.

Other releases should be kept distinct as well. The arcade original supports two players and all three heroes, while later conversions and re-releases vary in what they preserve or add. In particular, the Sega CD version restores the omitted Industrial Area and supports two players, making it a different adaptation from this SNES game. The Super Nintendo Final Fight remains a focused, solo rendition of Capcom’s Metro City rescue story: a five-round route through Mad Gear territory with Cody or Haggar, familiar combat tools, and substantial but clearly defined reductions from the arcade original.
