About
Strider for Sega Master System is a single-player side-scrolling action platform game released in 1991. Developed by Tiertex and published by Sega, it adapts Capcom's arcade adventure for Sega's 8-bit console. Players take the role of Hiryu, an elite Strider sent behind enemy lines to stop Grand Master Meio, a powerful ruler whose forces threaten the world. The game brings its futuristic ninja premise to the Master System in a compact home-console format.
Hiryu's Cypher, a plasma-bladed weapon, is the center of combat. Moving through each area means advancing on foot, leaping over hazards, and cutting through guards, robots, and other hostile creatures that block the route. The straightforward control scheme supports running, jumping, crouching, and attacking, while the pace asks players to judge enemy positions and the timing of each jump. Rather than relying on inventory systems or lengthy dialogue, Strider keeps the focus on immediate platforming and close-range action.
Progress is organized as a mission through five levels, with enemies and boss encounters standing between Hiryu and Meio. The stages use a science-fiction setting of guarded installations and hostile territory, giving the journey a constant sense of infiltration. Mid-level confrontations break up the forward push, and larger enemies at key points demand more care than ordinary opponents. Losing health, falling from the route, or running out the stage timer costs a life, so learning a section's hazards is an important part of reaching the next checkpoint.
The story follows the recognizable Strider setup: a lone operative descends from a stealth glider into the enemy's domain and works toward a final confrontation with the Grand Master. Hiryu's athletic movement and distinctive weapon give the game its identity, even on hardware much less powerful than the arcade board that introduced the character. Between-level scenes help carry the mission forward, while the action itself tells most of the story through its changing obstacles and opposition.
This Master System edition is a separate conversion from Sega's better-known Mega Drive/Genesis version. Tiertex had previously produced home-computer adaptations of Strider, and the Master System game follows that conversion lineage rather than attempting a direct reproduction of every arcade detail. Its 8-bit presentation necessarily simplifies the audiovisual spectacle and content of the original, but it preserves the basic objective: guide Hiryu through a succession of dangerous stages and defeat Meio.
As a result, Strider on Master System is best understood as an early-1990s console interpretation of Capcom's arcade concept, not the same game as the arcade release or the 16-bit Sega adaptation. It remains part of the broader Strider series through Hiryu, the Cypher, and the battle against Grand Master Meio, while its Tiertex-developed design gives the Master System version its own place among the franchise's many home releases.
