Trivial Pursuit : Genus Edition

1992 · Teque · Board Game, Logic Puzzle · 1-6 players

About

Trivial Pursuit: Genus Edition brings the classic general-knowledge board game to the Sega Master System. Teque London developed this 1992 European release for Domark, turning the familiar wheel-shaped board into a computer-controlled quiz for one to six players.

The aim follows the tabletop game closely. Players roll an on-screen die, choose their route around the board, and answer questions in the category indicated by the space they reach. Correct answers keep a turn moving; earning the six differently coloured wedges opens the final challenge at the centre of the board.

The six subjects are Geography, Entertainment, History, Art & Literature, Science & Nature, and Sports & Leisure. The game also uses the console format for picture or diagram questions and music-based questions, so not every prompt is plain text.

A solo mode sets the player against the clock, while multiplayer is a local, turn-taking contest for up to six people. After an answer is shown, the game asks the player to confirm whether it was correct, reflecting the honour-system feel of a living-room trivia session. It also records results by player and category, useful for seeing which subjects have proved strongest or weakest.

Its presentation centres on Russell, an animated question master, with colourful category screens, board graphics, and sound accompanying more than 2,000 questions. A standard Master System Control Pad is the listed peripheral.

This is a European-only release, distributed in the United Kingdom and several continental European countries rather than North America or Japan. It includes English, French, German, and Spanish language options; the question set nonetheless has a British slant, particularly in its television and sports references.
