About

Lemmings for Sega Master System is Probe Software’s 1992 8-bit adaptation of DMA Design’s celebrated puzzle game, published by SEGA in Europe. Rather than directly controlling a hero, the player oversees a stream of tiny green-haired, blue-clad walkers whose single-minded march can lead them straight into every hazard a stage contains.

Each puzzle begins by releasing lemmings from a hatch, then asks the player to deliver a stated number safely to the exit before time expires. Cliffs, water, traps, fire, barriers and gaps turn the route into a rescue operation; a level is won by meeting its required rescue percentage, not necessarily by saving every lemming.

A movable crosshair selects individual lemmings and assigns a limited stock of eight jobs. Climbers scale sheer walls, Floaters survive long falls, Builders lay rising stairways, Bashers cut horizontally, Miners tunnel downward at an angle and Diggers bore straight down. Blockers turn the crowd back, while Bombers sacrifice themselves after a short countdown to clear destructible terrain.

The Master System cartridge retains the familiar four single-player difficulty groups—Fun, Tricky, Taxing and Mayhem—with 30 levels in each for 120 stages altogether. Each group gradually shifts the challenge from teaching the available tools to demanding tight timing, economical skill use and careful control of several parts of the map at once.

This port has no competitive two-player mode, despite the original game having dedicated versus stages on some systems. It also omits the additional Oh No! More Lemmings level package found in the Mega Drive edition, keeping its focus on the main campaign instead.

Probe reworked the level set for the console. Several crossover stages using assets from other Psygnosis games were removed, while the Master System version gained exclusive stages, including five SEGA-themed puzzles. Hardware limits also restrict a stage to 20 active lemmings, so certain layouts and solutions differ from versions that can handle much larger crowds.

The conversion gives players a few practical tools for its larger scrolling levels. Starting with one controller button allows a stage preview before the hatch opens, and pressing the console’s Pause button freezes the action while the cursor can still be moved and a different skill can be selected. There is no map screen, however, and assigning an ability still happens in real time once play resumes, preserving the pressure at the heart of Lemmings.
