About

Home Alone for the Sega Master System is a 1993 single-player action-platform game developed by Probe Entertainment and published by Sega. Based on the 1990 film, it gives the familiar Christmas premise its own 8-bit interpretation: Kevin McCallister is stranded at home while Harry and Marv, the Wet Bandits, try to make off with valuables. This Master System edition is a separate game from the contemporaneous Home Alone releases on other systems, built around side-view exploration and a race against the clock.

Each stage sends Kevin through a sprawling, multi-floor house. The essential job is to locate its valuables, including rings and pots, and carry them back to the safe before time expires. The task becomes a contest of route planning as much as reflexes: valuables can change hands, and Kevin has to keep moving through rooms, stairs, and platforms while making sure the burglars do not escape with the loot. Allowing the Wet Bandits to leave with a valuable ends the attempt, so safeguarding the collection is as important as reaching it first.

Kevin can defend himself with a pump weapon and ammunition found during play. A successful shot briefly knocks an enemy down and makes a bandit carrying an item drop it, buying time to recover the valuables and continue the run. Contact with Harry or Marv is dangerous for the same reason, since it can cost Kevin an item. The design turns the movie's home-defense setup into a mobile chase through each house rather than simply a sequence of fixed traps.

The game's locations extend beyond a single recreation of the McCallister home, using several house types and bonus stages to vary the layouts. Pets also affect the action. Dogs can attack the bandits and cause them to lose a carried valuable, while cats can pull floor objects down to the level below. Those elements create small hazards and opportunities as Kevin searches rooms and transports his finds to safety.

Home Alone on Master System is notable within the series because its gameplay differs substantially from the other licensed versions. The Genesis and Game Gear releases focus on defending a neighborhood, while the NES, Game Boy, and Super NES games use other approaches to Kevin's struggle against the Wet Bandits. Probe's Master System game instead concentrates on 2D, side-scrolling house stages, timed collection, and recovering stolen treasure, giving Sega's 8-bit version a distinct identity among the many Home Alone adaptations released in the early 1990s.

Released in the Master System's later years, the game pairs its film tie-in premise with a format suited to the console's control pad: direct movement, jumping, shooting, and fast decisions about which valuables to secure next. Its win condition remains firmly tied to Kevin's goal of protecting the household: gather the goods, keep them out of Harry and Marv's hands, and get them into the safe before the deadline closes.
