About
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for Sega Genesis, also released for Mega Drive in Europe, is a 1994 2D fighting game based on the first season of the television series. Developed by Banpresto and published by Sega, this cartridge takes the franchise’s battles with Rita Repulsa’s forces and frames them as one-on-one showdowns. Its design is distinct from the contemporaneous Nintendo Power Rangers games: rather than a side-scrolling action adventure, the Genesis game focuses on versus-style combat and giant-robot clashes.
The single-player Scenario Mode casts the original team—Red, Blue, Black, Yellow, and Pink Rangers—against Rita’s monsters. Before each encounter, the player chooses a Ranger, then fights the opponent at normal scale. Winning that bout does not end the confrontation: the monster grows, and the action shifts to the Megazord for a second round against the enlarged threat. This two-part format gives the campaign a clear connection to the show’s familiar escalation from Ranger combat to Zord battles.
One of the scenario’s central conflicts is the Green Ranger’s appearance as an enemy. His encounter breaks the usual pattern by bringing in the Dragonzord during the large-scale portion of the fight. Completing the challenge rewards progress beyond the immediate stage: the Green Ranger and Dragonzord become available for later use. That unlock structure makes the campaign more than a fixed sequence of CPU matches, while keeping the focus on characters and machines associated with the series’ early episodes.
Matches use a compact Genesis controller scheme built around two attack strengths and directional inputs. Fighters can attack while standing, jumping, or crouching, and each character has special techniques activated with input combinations. Defense matters as well: backing away from an opponent performs a standard block, while pressing both attack buttons produces a stronger guard that can turn away projectiles. The result is a straightforward fighting system intended to make basic exchanges accessible while leaving room to learn each combatant’s special moves.
Battle Mode lets two local players face one another in best-of-three contests. Its selection includes the Rangers, several of Rita’s monsters, and the Zords, though the game separates human-sized and giant-sized matchups rather than allowing every possible pairing. The roster and rules therefore reinforce the contrast that drives Scenario Mode: Ranger-scale duels are one kind of fight, and Megazord or Dragonzord confrontations are another. Players also cannot simply mirror the other player’s character choice, which gives each side a different fighter in a standard versus match.
Released in North America in October 1994, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers arrived while the series was a major pop-culture phenomenon and expanded Sega’s licensed Genesis catalog. Sega also issued the game in Europe later that year under the Mega Drive branding, and a North American Mega Hit Series re-release followed in 1997. The game remains a notable early Power Rangers adaptation for presenting both martial-arts-style Ranger fights and the giant-machine battles of the source material within a single Genesis fighting game.
