About

Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes (Euro 980123) is the European arcade program revision of Capcom's 1998 crossover fighting game for the CP System II hardware. Developed and published by Capcom, it brings Marvel Comics heroes and villains together with characters from Capcom games in rapid two-on-two battles. The Euro 980123 label identifies this regional arcade set and its January 23, 1998 program date; it is still the same foundational Clash of Super Heroes arcade game rather than a later Dreamcast, PlayStation, or compilation release.

Each side chooses two playable fighters, but only one is active at a time. Players use the arcade controls to walk, jump, block, attack, and perform character-specific special moves, then exchange their active and reserve characters during a match. A resting teammate gradually recovers health, so swapping can be both an offensive change of pace and a way to protect a damaged fighter. A team wins by emptying both opposing life bars, or by holding the greater remaining health when the round timer expires.

The battles combine the air movement, projectile pressure, chains of normal attacks, and large animated supers associated with Capcom's Marvel fighting games. The Hyper Combo Gauge builds during combat and powers stronger techniques. At sufficient meter, a player can trigger a Duo Team Attack, also called a Variable Cross, briefly putting both selected fighters on screen and allowing them to attack together. Players can also force an opponent to bring in their reserve character, making team order and meter use important parts of a round rather than simple background choices.

Clash of Super Heroes changes the support system used by Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. Instead of calling the off-screen teammate as an assist, each player receives a randomly assigned Special Partner at the start of a match, with limited uses during that round. These support characters draw from both sides of the crossover, while the playable lineup ranges from Marvel names such as Spider-Man, Captain America, Hulk, Wolverine, and Iron Man to Capcom representatives including Ryu, Chun-Li, Mega Man, Morrigan, Strider Hiryu, and Captain Commando. Secret selections expand the cast with altered versions of existing fighters and Roll from Mega Man.

The arcade game's conflict culminates with Onslaught, connecting its finale to Marvel's mid-1990s comic-book storyline. Its broader roster was a notable step for the series: earlier Capcom-versus-Marvel games had concentrated more heavily on Street Fighter and X-Men characters, whereas this entry makes room for multiple Capcom franchises. The result is a colorful meeting of distinct fighting styles, with the comic side and Capcom side sharing the same fast, exaggerated CPS-2 presentation.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes followed Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter and was later succeeded by Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes. The original arcade design was subsequently adapted for Dreamcast and PlayStation, although those versions differed in features; the PlayStation port in particular made compromises to its tag-team presentation because of memory limits. For the Euro 980123 arcade set, the focus remains Capcom's coin-operated CPS-2 two-player fighter: direct team switching, limited Special Partner calls, and meter-driven Duo Team Attacks define the version represented here.
