About
Macross Plus is a 1996 Japanese arcade shoot 'em up published by Banpresto and based on the Macross Plus animated production. It turns the series' experimental variable-fighter imagery into a fast, vertically scrolling action game for the arcade rather than retelling the full drama of its OVA and film. The cabinet game should not be confused with Macross Plus: Game Edition, the separate PlayStation adaptation released later in Japan.
Players select one of three aircraft associated with the Macross Plus setting before flying into a succession of enemy formations, ground targets, and large bosses. The YF-19 is piloted by Isamu Dyson, the YF-21 by Guld Bowman, and the VF-11 by a female pilot created for the game. These choices give the shooter a direct connection to the competing prototype fighters central to the anime while keeping the focus on immediate arcade combat.
The action is presented from above as the screen scrolls forward through futuristic military zones and hostile encounters. A standard gun attack handles constant fire, while homing missiles and bombs add stronger options for dangerous moments. Special enemies can leave power-ups behind, letting a run build more firepower and encouraging players to survive long enough to improve their ship.
Its controls and structure follow the traditions of 1990s vertical shooters: read incoming formations, position carefully, clear threats before they crowd the screen, and reserve powerful attacks for bosses or dense enemy waves. The game was designed around an arcade challenge, so each credit asks players to balance aggression with evasive movement as the pace and pressure rise.
Macross Plus stands as one of Banpresto's 1990s Macross arcade games and as a compact licensed interpretation of the franchise. Instead of attempting to reproduce the anime's transforming-fighter storytelling in full, it uses recognizable craft, pilots, and science-fiction atmosphere to frame a score-driven scrolling shooter. For fans of Macross, arcade shooters, and emulated coin-op games, it offers a distinct mid-1990s take on the series.
