About

The Hobbit on Game Boy Advance is a single-player action-adventure adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's novel, following Bilbo Baggins as Gandalf draws the comfort-loving hobbit into Thorin Oakenshield's expedition. Bilbo travels with the dwarves toward the Lonely Mountain, where Smaug guards the treasure of Erebor. This handheld version was developed by Saffire and published by Sierra Entertainment, and it is a separate build from the 2003 home-console and PC game. Its story comes from Tolkien's book rather than Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings films, so its characters and presentation stand apart from the screen adaptations of that era.

The Game Boy Advance edition presents Middle-earth from an isometric three-quarter overhead view. Bilbo moves through compact, illustrated locations inspired by the Shire, the Misty Mountains, Mirkwood, Lake-town and the approach to the Lonely Mountain. The camera and tile-based environments give the adventure a different rhythm from the third-person console versions, while still framing the journey as a sequence of story chapters. Dialogue and objectives connect familiar episodes from the novel, beginning with Bilbo's reluctant departure and carrying the player through encounters with goblins, elves, spiders and other dangers on the road east.

Exploration is built around quests. Main tasks open the route to the next area, while optional errands can reward careful players with useful items or extra resources. Players search rooms, paths and dangerous side areas for chests, keys and hidden pickups, with some treasure requiring a timed lock-picking challenge. This makes a short objective such as locating an item or helping an ally more than a simple trip from one map exit to the next, and it encourages attention to the routes around Bilbo rather than only the direct path forward.

Bilbo is an unlikely hero, and the game reflects that through a mix of evasion, item use and straightforward fighting. He starts with a walking stick and can throw stones at enemies, then gains Sting as the adventure develops. Magical scrolls improve combat options, while healing supplies, antidotes, keys and other equipment can be found or purchased with silver pennies. The One Ring can make Bilbo temporarily invisible, creating opportunities to slip past threats instead of confronting every opponent. Courage Points, collected as colored gems and earned through progress, contribute to Bilbo's health capacity.

The plot follows the broad course of The Hobbit while expanding scenes into playable challenges. Bilbo becomes separated from the company in the goblin caves, finds a mysterious ring and faces Gollum, then reunites with Gandalf and the dwarves. Later chapters deal with the perils of Mirkwood, the imprisonment of the dwarves by the Wood-elves, escape toward Lake-town and the shadow cast by Smaug. The game also includes the quest for the Arkenstone and the conflict around the dragon's hoard, giving the campaign a clear through-line from Bilbo's quiet home to the decisive events near the Lonely Mountain.

For Game Boy Advance players, The Hobbit offers a portable interpretation of one of fantasy literature's best-known journeys. Its overhead viewpoint, quest structure and inventory-driven progression distinguish the Saffire version from the other releases under the same title. The focus remains on guiding Bilbo through a literary adventure: exploring, solving small environmental problems, managing supplies, avoiding or battling creatures, and helping the dwarves reclaim their homeland. It is a suitable choice for players interested in Tolkien game adaptations and a handheld action-adventure shaped around Bilbo's first great journey beyond the Shire.
