About
Hugo 2 1/2 for Game Boy Color is a 1999 action game developed by Bit Managers and published by Infogrames in Europe. It is the colour Game Boy Color version of the 1997 Game Boy release Hugo 2, drawing on the children’s interactive television franchise built around Hugo, the friendly troll. Rather than being related to the separately titled PlayStation game, this compact handheld release adapts the television show’s challenge-based format into a single-player adventure.
The game is organised around a series of short arcade-style trials in which keeping Hugo safe and gathering money bags are equally important. Before a stage, the selected difficulty determines how many bags are needed to advance, so collecting is part of progression rather than a purely optional score chase. Players begin with a limited supply of lives, and the brisk challenges ask for alert movement and careful reactions as hazards arrive.
Its scenarios give the adventure several distinct play styles. An underwater sequence has Hugo swim ahead while avoiding obstacles and resurfacing to breathe. A snowboarding section similarly tests dodging skills on a faster route, while the forest stage sends him automatically onward and requires timely jumps or ducks to clear threats. In the ice-cave challenge, Hugo moves across a bottomless area by using pillars that rise and fall, introducing a more deliberate four-direction navigation test.
Completing the main challenges opens a further stage, giving the separate minigames the shape of a small campaign rather than an unconnected selection of modes. Hugo 2 1/2 also adds a training mode on Game Boy Color, allowing players to practise its levels individually. That option is especially useful when learning the changing hazards and the collection targets associated with each difficulty setting.
As a late-1990s handheld entry in the Hugo series, Hugo 2 1/2 keeps its focus on immediately readable, repeatable challenges instead of lengthy exploration. Its Game Boy Color release distinguishes it from the earlier monochrome Hugo 2 with colour presentation and the additional practice feature, while preserving the show-inspired mixture of survival, quick reactions, and score-oriented collection.
