Lemmings

Lemmings was broadcast for Japan’s Satellaview service under the Japanese title レミングス on December 1, 1996. The broadcast list records it as a one-week programme, with no SoundLink support and not as an original game made specifically for Satellaview. That makes this entry a short-lived satellite distribution of the established puzzle game rather than a new broadcast serial.

The game asks the player to shepherd a stream of tiny, single-minded creatures from an entrance to an exit. Left alone, they keep walking and will wander into drops, hazards, or dead ends. Success is determined by rescuing the required number before the stage timer expires, so a route must be planned while the procession is already in motion.

Control is indirect: instead of steering every character, the player assigns a limited supply of jobs to selected lemmings. The available roles let them climb, use a parachute, block their companions, dig downward or diagonally, tunnel horizontally, build stairways, or explode to reshape the terrain. A well-placed worker can turn the behavior of the entire crowd, while a wasted assignment can make the rescue impossible.

This version belongs to a game that began on the Amiga in 1991, developed by DMA Design and published by Psygnosis, then spread to many systems. In Japan, Sunsoft released the Super Famicom edition on December 18, 1991. The Satellaview listing’s non-original designation is consistent with the service carrying an existing title, but surviving catalogues do not establish a special Satellaview-only set of levels or features.

The appeal is the tension between careful construction and constant pressure. Players must read the landscape, decide which lemming should become the first climber or builder, and keep the rest of the group from following a newly opened route into danger. The combination of limited tools, a rescue quota, and a continuing flow of characters makes each stage a compact logistics puzzle.
