About

Rival Schools: United by Fate for PlayStation is Capcom's 1998 home conversion of its 1997 arcade 3D fighting game, bringing the schoolyard-themed brawler to PS1 in an expanded two-disc release. Known in Japan as Shiritsu Justice Gakuen: Legion of Heroes, it places a cast of students, teachers, and delinquents from several Aoharu City schools in a mystery involving attacks and disappearances. Capcom built the game around colorful polygonal fighters, dramatic team techniques, and a deliberately heightened school-anime atmosphere.

Matches begin by choosing a pair of fighters, but combat itself is fought one-on-one. The selected partner waits offscreen until enough Vigor has been built to call on them for a Team Up. These assists can attack or protect, giving the two-character selection real tactical weight without turning each bout into continuous tag fighting. Between rounds, players can keep their current fighter in play or bring their teammate forward, so both health management and partner choice shape a set.

The PS1 controls use four main attack buttons for light and heavy punches and kicks. Fighters can launch opponents for air combos, spend Vigor on individual Burning Vigor specials, and use Team Up moves that cost more meter. Rival Schools also includes defensive answers beyond ordinary blocking: Tardy Counters let a defender strike back from guard, while well-timed Attack Cancels can neutralize opposing attacks. The result is a competitive fighting system built around meters, timing, launches, and the extra possibilities created by a partner.

Its story mode gives the school setting a role beyond the character art. Picking students from the same school can lead into a more directed sequence of battles with illustrated scenes, while mixed-school teams follow a more conventional ladder. Batsu Ichimonji is central to the investigation, and the wider roster draws from Taiyo, Gorin, Pacific, Gedo, and Justice High. Players eventually uncover the connection between the incidents and Justice High, confronting its leadership as the plot develops. Street Fighter's Sakura Kasugano also appears, linking the game to another Capcom fighting series.

The PlayStation edition is notably more than the arcade game on a disc. Its first CD contains the core fighter with added animated opening and ending material, voice work in the single-player story, and two characters introduced for the conversion: physical-education teacher Hayato Nekketsu and gang leader Daigo Kazama. All of the standard cast is immediately selectable on PS1, unlike the arcade version's initial same-school selection restriction. The second Evolution Disc supplies additional modes and school-themed diversions, including Lesson, Group, League, Tournament, Cooperate, and Versus options.

Regional content matters when discussing Rival Schools: United by Fate on PS1. The Japanese release included Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki, a school-life character-creation mode in which a custom student developed relationships and inherited moves. Capcom planned an English version called School Life, but it was not included in the North American and PAL releases because of the localization work it required. Those overseas versions still retain the two-disc format and the other Evolution Disc activities, making them distinct from both the original arcade release and Japan's later expanded PlayStation follow-up.

Rival Schools launched the series that continued with the arcade and Dreamcast game Project Justice. Its PlayStation conversion is especially important for preserving the original game's team-focused format while adding home-specific characters, presentation, and multiplayer-oriented modes. For players exploring Capcom's late-1990s fighting catalog, Rival Schools: United by Fate PS1 stands apart through its high-school mystery, paired-fighter structure, and Evolution Disc extras rather than simply functioning as a direct arcade port.
