About
Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage for Super Nintendo is a 1994 single-player side-scrolling beat ’em up developed by Software Creations and published by LJN. It adapts Marvel’s Maximum Carnage comic-book storyline, placing Spider-Man and his uneasy ally Venom against Carnage’s growing criminal force in New York City. The SNES game turns that conflict into a long, combat-driven adventure through streets, buildings, hideouts and other dangerous locations, with comic-inspired scenes linking the action. Its title makes the partnership central: Spider-Man and Venom are not simply interchangeable costumes, but two heroes with their own ways of confronting the same crisis.
The basic objective is to advance through each area, clear opposition and survive the encounters that block the route to Carnage. Spider-Man begins the campaign, while later transitions can let the player select Spider-Man or Venom for the next part of the adventure. Combat relies on punches, jumping kicks, throws and attacks with grabbed enemies or objects. A dash attack, somersault and spinning kick add movement-based options, so success is not limited to standing in front of opponents and trading blows. Life-restoring hearts, extra lives and continue items appear during play, making exploration and survival as important as dealing damage.
Both playable characters bring superhero movement to the beat ’em up format. Spider-Man can fire webbing, form a web shield and use web lines for swinging and vertical travel. Venom uses an extended arm to seize enemies, and both characters can climb surfaces and use the level geometry to reposition themselves. The Super Nintendo controller layout assigns direct actions to the face buttons, including jumping, attacking, web or grab techniques, and web-line movement. These systems make walls, overhead lines and enemy placement part of the challenge rather than mere background decoration.
Maximum Carnage also builds its action around a roster drawn from the comic event. Carnage is the principal threat, supported by villains including Shriek, Doppelganger, Demogoblin and Carrion. Spider-Man and Venom can find special icons that call in Marvel allies for assistance; the available cast includes characters such as Captain America, Black Cat, Iron Fist, Cloak and Dagger, Deathlok, Morbius and Firestar. The player scrolls through collected hero calls with the L Button and activates the selected one with the R Button, giving these limited assists a tactical use during crowded fights and demanding boss encounters.
The SNES release is a distinct 16-bit home-console version of Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage, released alongside a closely related Sega Genesis edition. It is a one-player game with a continue system rather than a password feature, and it was designed around steadily working through stages with either Spider-Man or Venom when the story allows a choice. The game is especially recognizable for its unusual red SNES cartridge, a striking departure from the system’s standard gray shells. Maximum Carnage was followed in 1995 by Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety, another 16-bit action game built around the same two headline characters.
