About

Myst for PlayStation is the 1996 console adaptation of Cyan's first-person puzzle adventure, published in North America by Psygnosis. The PlayStation release retains the original game's isolated island, pre-rendered point-of-view scenes, and book-driven exploration. Instead of a computer mouse, the directional pad moves a cursor across each scene and the X button selects routes, mechanisms, and other objects.

The player is the Stranger, an unnamed person who finds a book titled Myst and is drawn through its final page to the island it describes. With little explanation of how to leave, the Stranger searches the docks, buildings, tunnels, and library for clues. The story is largely assembled from the surroundings, written journals, recordings, and the results of solving the island's machinery.

Myst Island is a hub for linking books that lead to several self-contained Ages. The Selenitic, Stoneship, Mechanical, and Channelwood Ages each use a different setting and set of devices, from sound-based clues to switches, transport systems, codes, and spatial arrangements. Progress depends on observation and connecting information found in one place with a mechanism elsewhere, rather than combat, item-heavy inventory management, or reflex challenges.

In the library, the Stranger encounters red and blue books holding messages from Sirrus and Achenar, the sons of the book-writer Atrus. Each brother says that the other caused their family's ruin and asks to be released, but missing pages leave their accounts incomplete. Finding red and blue pages in the Ages makes the brothers' messages clearer while raising questions about which of them can be trusted.

The central choice is not settled by visiting only one Age. The Stranger must learn how the books, pages, and hidden routes on Myst Island relate to Atrus, who is also absent from the island. Different actions can free Sirrus, free Achenar, reach Atrus without what he needs, or bring Atrus the missing page required to resolve the situation, leading to different conclusions.

This PlayStation version presents the original Myst structure as a sequence of fixed viewpoints and crossfading movements, rather than the free-roaming real-time world introduced by later realMyst releases. It also predates the PSP remake and its added Rime Age, so its content centers on Myst Island and the four original Ages. The result is a console port built around patient exploration, controller-guided interaction, and a mystery whose answers are embedded in the places the Stranger visits.
