About

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 for Super Famicom is a turn-based tactical role-playing game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. It is the fifth Fire Emblem game and a companion story to Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, set on Jugdral's Thracia Peninsula during the earlier game's second-generation era. Nintendo first distributed it in Japan through the Super Famicom Nintendo Power rewritable-cartridge service on September 1, 1999; a conventional Super Famicom ROM cartridge followed on January 21, 2000. This Japanese-only release is commonly catalogued as a Super NES game, though it was made for the Japanese Super Famicom.

The campaign follows Leif, a prince of Lenster who has grown up in exile after the loss of his homeland. When the village that shelters him is attacked and his companions Nanna and Mareeta are taken, Leif begins a struggle against the forces controlling the region. His small resistance expands as the story moves through northern Thracia and the conflict surrounding the Grannvale Empire. Finn, a loyal knight connected to Lenster's royal family, is among the returning Genealogy of the Holy War characters, and the game fills in events and relationships from that wider Jugdral setting rather than retelling its parent title's campaign.

Battles take place on grid-based maps, with the player moving a selected army one unit at a time before the opposing side takes its turn. Objectives vary by chapter: some maps ask the player to defeat a key enemy, seize a location, rescue a target, or guide Leif and his allies safely to an escape point. Terrain affects movement, while houses, churches, chests, shops, and other map features can supply items, money, healing, or strategic opportunities. When opposing units fight, the action shifts to a separate combat display; experience gains lead to level-ups, and each character class determines the weapons, movement, and battlefield role available to that unit.

Thracia 776 places particular emphasis on managing a changing roster. From the preparation screen in later chapters, players select who will deploy and organize inventories before a mission. Mounted characters can dismount, including when fighting indoors, which changes their equipment and capabilities. The familiar weapon triangle governs the basic sword, lance, and axe matchups, but map conditions ask for more than straightforward attacks: fog can restrict visibility, and the game uses a broad range of infantry, cavalry, thieves, staff users, and other specialists. Optional side chapters can also be reached by meeting conditions during the main campaign.

Several systems give its tactical play a distinct identity. The fatigue mechanic tracks exertion from actions such as combat and staff use; a unit that becomes too tired must sit out a following chapter unless its fatigue is addressed, encouraging the player to rotate allies instead of relying on one core squad. Capture is another important risk-and-reward option. A sufficiently strong unit can try to take an enemy alive, accepting reduced battle statistics during the attempt; successful captures can provide access to the captive's carried equipment. Rescue and carrying actions add further positional choices, especially when protecting vulnerable allies or moving through difficult maps.

As the final Fire Emblem created for the Super Famicom, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 arrived late in that system's life while remaining closely tied to Nintendo's earlier Jugdral stories. Its 1999 Nintendo Power version and 2000 cartridge edition reflect an unusual release history for the series, and Nintendo later made it available in Japan through the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console services. It was never officially released outside Japan, but its demanding chapter objectives, resource-conscious unit management, and focused Leif-centered story make it a notable entry for players exploring the Super Famicom era of Fire Emblem.
